War in the North

Before the gods emerged from their cave the Dragons ventured all over Nibmu. They found large rich forests, dry deserts, impassable mountains, and frozen lands. In the northern lands, they found a new group of non-dragons. These beings stood taller than any dragon, their bodies blue as ice and white as snow, their main weapons were the clubs made from the bones of mammoths, along with leather slings with boulders of ice. Their bodies coated in fur, mouths hanging long teeth. Their leader stood tallest of them all. His body sat fused to a mountain throne. Every Dragonlord of the Ice Dragons that lived in the region before the war went to him to ask permission for the Ice Dragons to live there. His name is Ymir, and even Nibmu itself fears if he ever goes to war for when Ymir moves the world quakes.   The magic that fueled the dragons and light that fueled the gods made both sets of creatures powerful beyond measure. The giants held a different strength. They held weapons no stronger than anything the other creatures held, but their ferocity is something to behold. Before the Dragonlords respected the ice giants they went into conflict. They warred with one another over the mountains that the Giants called home. During that time the Ice Dragons had yet to evolve, and dragons themselves were new to the region. They fought the wars the same way they fought all wars, in the air. Flying in the north was difficult, dragon's wings froze, their fire was less effective. They fell to the snow before they even reached the lines where the frost giants stood. The giants just waited.   The first battles were massacres. The dragon's attempted to speak their spells and call their magic. This did enough damage to the frost giants to force a few Giants back, but an army not so much. The skin of the giants was thick, so thick and hard. The dragon's claws hurt them, and their arms were strong. They swung basic weapons, but the force broke through even a dragon's scale. The first set of dragons to try and force the mountain was thrown off. The second faired little better. The giants began using their scales to make armor and their bones as weapons. The dragons made a settlement in a mountain to the west and ignored the giants.   The second conflict against the mountain giants began sometime later. Generations of dragon lived and died within the north. Now great Ice Dragons stood within the mountains. They could not fly but sported a layer of thick white and blue fur that coated their skin. Their hide hardened, and the fur protected them as well as any dragon scale. They were used to fighting in the north, not against giants, but these dragons were different than the dragons they fought before. The Ice Dragons to the north roared to life and attacked with ice and fury. The giants held their own they still held the numbers and stood stronger. If nothing else they fought in the mountains many more times than the Ice Dragons.   The dragons faired better. The mountainside was flooded with the bodies of both dragons and giants. The fallen honored, but the giants made progress. They brought in more, and larger giants. The dragons called for other tribes. The tribes came led by a Dragonlord Kilgharrah. The Dragons flew at the giants and crashed to the snow. The giants laughed remembering their victory years earlier. They charged forward, and Kilgharrah's tribe retreated back. Kilgharrah flew above his scales lit aflame by his own breath. He roared and rained a gel down on the charging giants. They burned in the snow as Kilgharrah laughed above.   That day Drakes charged forward attacking the larger giants five to one. The Ice Dragons won their mountain, but the war didn't end. The giants readied for another round. The ground quaked. Ymir walked towards the Dragon's mountain. Panic ripped through the Dragon's mountain. All little ones were taken south while the warrior prepared to defend the mountain until the civilians all made it out. Ymir called for the Dragonlord. Morozko answered leaving orders with his men to defend to the last, and a request to Kilgharrah to stand with his people as long as he can.   Ymir stood taller than the mountain Morozko left. The leader of the giants picked up the dragon and placed him on his shoulder. The spoke at length and formed a deal to end the war between the species. Ymir will allow the dragons to remain the north as long as they stay away from his mountain. The only exception will be when a new Dragonlord is named. Then the dragon will have to come to the giants and ask permission to stay within the mountain.

The Conflict

Prelude

Before hostilities began, the giants found a group of dragons within the mountain. The two groups attempted to speak, but an accidental spell by one of the dragons caused a fight to break out. Both sides retreated away. The dragons returned to the mountain to investigate the large creatures there and were attacked. War was declared and thousands of dragons flocked to the mountains.

Deployment

The giants kept to their mountain. The higher ground made their projectiles go considerably farther. They protected the passes to their main city using a combination of mammoth calvary, and slingers across the canyon walls. Outside the passages to the cities, large armies of giants moved further down the mountain to allow them to move. Mammoths stood on the wings while foot soldiers held the center.   The dragons attempted to attack using the air. They attempted to do dive bombs against the mammoths, but their wings froze in flight. Most dragon's flames didn't even make it to the front lines of the giants, those that did, did little damage. The first waves of dragons were beaten when the Giants counter attacked.   During the second wars. While Ice Dragons were considerably larger than the ones that attacked the giants before, they were still shorter than and faster than giants. The Ice Dragons used that by keeping most of the fighting outside in areas they could move. When possible they attempted to isolate groups of giants.   After the arrival of Kilgharrah deployment changed. Kilgharrah needed to break the siege around the Ice Dragon's mountain. To unite their forces he needed a clear victory that sent the Frost Giants back. Their reinforcements would take time to come. He carried with him two species of dragons, four-legged dragons with two wings and drakes. Drakes were the larger number, he held back the deployment of them since the giants hadn't seen that breed.   He deployed his dragons in the same way the other dragons did in the first conflict. His first wave to dragons would fly high and breath fire. The second wave would be only Kilgharrah. The Drakes would attack following that. The Drakes were directed to never attack a giant alone always work in teams of three or four.

Battlefield

The first conflict was fought in the north most tip of Nibmu. A mountain exists there with several valleys were most of the fighting occurred.   The second conflict happed a further west. A mountain range exists northwest of a grasslands.

The Engagement

First Conflict: The first engagement didn't last long. It is widely believed that a dragon was demonstrating magic to one of the giants and the spell backfired. Both sides misunderstood what happened and members of both sides attacked. Several giants and dragons died.   After a full tribe flew north to deal with the creatures attacking the giants. The giants fortified their mountain. While flying up there the wings of the dragons froze the creatures didn't last long their movement compromise they were beaten and killed in moments. A second wave attacked but again was repulsed.   The Dragons then moved west leaving the mountain alone. The giants never forgot, they believed the dragons would return. When they found a settlement on the edge of their territory they organized a group to attack and send the dragons out of their land.   The dragons had evolved. They found a stone within the mountain of their city. The stone inscribed with the name Ithaqua. This stone gave power to the dragons there and through a ritual, they managed to transform their population in a few generations. The Ice Dragons were larger, thicker, more powerful, and able to stand against the Mountain Giants.   The mountain was surrounded by giants. The dragons held them out using the advantages they held. The dragons called for help which the received. Kilgharrah assisted in breaking the siege by faining a retreat and then attacking using his own special brand of fire. The giants burned and retreated. What remained was attacked by an army of Drakes, another new subspecies.

Outcome

In the short term, the Ice Dragons earned their right to stay within the north of Nibmu. The Frost Giants left them around for a while. The Dragonlord Morozko was challenged shortly after.

Aftermath

The indecisiveness of the conflict left bad blood on both sides. The Frost Giants and the dragons would never ally with one another. The Ice Dragons also had to go to the giants every time their leader changed and always to ask to remain within the north.
