History and Significance

Emberfall was forged during Neverwinter's golden age, before the Spellplague and Mount Hotenow's eruption devastated the city. Originally carried by Captain Thorne Blackwater, leader of the Neverwinter Guard, the sword was thought lost when volcanic ash and magical catastrophe consumed much of the city in 1451 DR.

The weapon's creation involved a collaboration between the city's greatest smith, Jorik Ironforge, and court wizard Valindra Shadowmantle (before her transformation into a lich). They infused the blade with protective enchantments drawn from the city's wards and blessed it in the name of Tyr, patron deity of justice and Neverwinter's traditional protector.

During the city's darkest hours, Emberfall served as a beacon of hope. Captain Blackwater used it to lead evacuations through smoke and flame, its warm radiance guiding citizens to safety. The sword's warmth is said to come from the forge-fires of Neverwinter itself, carrying the city's indomitable spirit.

Connection to Current Neverwinter

The sword recognizes Neverwinter's legitimate rulers and protectors. When wielded within the city limits by someone acting in the city's defense, Emberfall's blade glows softly with golden light (bright light in a 10-foot radius, dim light for an additional 10 feet) and the wielder gains inspiration once per long rest when performing acts of heroism to protect Neverwinter's citizens.
