War of the Scorching fields
The Lords Alliance and Cormyr offically declared war in 1612, and the Lords Alliance have been slowly losing ground since.
Firstly, they lost at Silverymoon in the northern theatre. Then they lost Elturel in the southern theatre. This has left baldurs gate exposed, but they've managed to hold off additional attacks. Moreover, Elturel was not captured, but rather the city totally disappeared.
The war began with great gains for Cormyr but they eventually got into a stalemate, as the Lords Alliance employed a scorched earth tactic (hence the conflict's name). Cormyr would eventually be unable to sustain their supply line against ambush tactics, and had to sue for peace.
The Conflict

Cormyr's militarisation. Annexation of Luskan and Mirabar by the Lords alliance. Destruction of the wards of Silverymoon.

Disappearance of Elturel
Loss of Mithral Hall (and the loss of the Lord's Alliance's Mithril supply)
Aftermath
The Lord's Alliance showed it was no longer the Sword coasts' dominant military force, especially on land. Their naval dominance, and the many rivers of the land, did ultimately help save them in this conflict.
