Battle of Red Larch

"On this spot in the year 1633, Rangers and soldiers of the Lords Alliance turned back the forces of Cormyr during the Battle of Red Larch. Over one hundred men and women gave their lives on the Nevern soil to defend local civilians and the principles of the alliance. May this humble stone be an enduring memorial to their valor and sacrifice." - A memorial on the remains of Red Larch.   The Battle began with a surprise attack against Yartar by Cormyr. They took advantage of a rolling fog and used their airships, obscured by the mist, to drop alchemists' fire upon Yartar. This immoblilised the defences long enough for Cormyr to take over Yartar.
The Lords Alliance's army pulled out of the city, and quickly rallied to the nearby village of Red Larch, a village marking the midpoint of Yartar and Triboar. Fearing the loss of Triboar, but having no ready defences in Red Larch, the general of the Northern Army, Bradford Arkwright, ordered a full evacuation of the village, and to fill each and every house with barrels of gunpowder and alchemist's fire. The rest of the Lords Alliance's army hid in the forests surrounding the city, sending a small detachment west as a diversion, so it appeared they were retreating. The pursuing Cormyn army, convinced they had them on the run, confidently moved into the deserted village, at which point the entire place detonated. The Corymn army was scattered and weakened, as the Lords Alliance closed in from the North and South.
With the Cormyn command functionally decapitated, the Lords Alliance swept back into Yartar and easily recaptured it, in the largest (and final) proper engagement on the northern front of the war of Scorching Fields. It was also the most devastating battle, with thousands of losses on both sides.    The Cormyn army, after advancing through three major offences in the North, was comprised of a small number of deadly veterans and a large number of inexperienced conscripts taken from the captured lands. Many of their veterans, including plenty of their skilled airship pilots and engineers, were killed in this battle. It ensured that Yartar would not again fall to Cormyr.   Unfortunately, it also completely annihilated the village of Red Larch, which previously had a population of around 400. Most of them escaped to Triboar, but at least 100 citizens were killed in the scrambled fighting. The Lords Alliance lost over 1000 soldiers, with 5 times as many injured.   This battle is sometimes also called the Battle of Yartar. It is however, more accurate to split it into three battles; the first battle of Yartar when Cormyn invaded, the Battle of Red Larch when Red Larch was destroyed and Cormyr was routed, and the second battle of Yartar, where Yartar was reclaimed by the Lords Alliance.
Whilst the battle of Red Larch is generally used to refer to all three by the population (as it's the most memorable of the three), it's more accurate to refer to the sum of the three engagements as the Battle of Yartar. The latter expression becomes more common the farther from Red Larch you are.   "Though Red Larch survived the soul sweeping without any damage, the Lords Alliance intentionally razed most of the town with a series of explosions during the Battle of Yartar" - Sage Mohsha's History of Modern Cormyr, part 2.

Historical Significance

Legacy

In the year 1693, this is still (just about) in living memory for the citizens of Yartar and Triboar. It is widely regarded as a slaughter on both sides, and epitomises the scorched earth policy of the Lords Alliance, as well as the civilian attacks by the Cormyn airships.
