The Ministry of Mystra and the Star Sisters
“Lady Magic is good. See the people of this city that have forgotten and disgraced the mother of their spells. Hypocrites! Straighten up sisters, live by the scriptures. We are Our Lady’s image to the world. Be ever gracious and vigilant to darkness so that people can revere magic Tomorrow come.” – Sister Cathe’s daily mantra.
After the Soul Sweeping of 1492 DR the Neveren population grew a distaste and fear towards the Arcane Arts, and rightfully so. The worshippers of Mystra, Goddess of magic and keeper of the weave, were likewise shunned for what the people preemptively deemed as dark and evil practices.
Nowadays, worshippers of Mystra are few and far between. Those who do still worship her tend to be secretive about their faith and practices, out of fear of being ostracised. Though the faith is not inherently evil, it has been abused in the past by powerful and evil wizards and is thus often stigmatised. There are a few that still worship Mystra in the guild of eternal flame.
One particular order of nuns refer to themselves as Star Sisters, or the Ministry of Mystra. The sisters believe above all else that Mystra is a good aligned Goddess, and thus try to demonstrate this through every aspect of their lives. Few religious groups are as devout as the Star Sisters. This ministry led by Sister Cathe follow the scriptures to the letter and without exception.
The Ministry of Mystra technically branches off the Guild of Eternal Flame. They're offered protection by the likewise highly lawful Guild, and Kaerla Brightfire has taken a personal interest in the plight of these women. They both share a deeply lawful streak, and a common goal of promoting the good of magic in the world. They differ in that the guild is highly militaristic, with martial and magical training, while the Sisters are more spiritual in their study of magic. Kaerla was personal friends with their founders and continues to help the sisters in their activities.
They have a seperate building from the Ignis Institute (only across the road, behind the west wing of the Ignis Institute). Though the public know the order as Star Sisters, the fact that they worship Mystra is kept generally hidden. Their members are easily recognisable due to their distinct uniforms; white cloaks over dark robes with a blood red veil covering their faces in order to keep the Sisterhood members anonymous. The Star Sisters main role is to recruit and act as a shelter for women and girls fleeing from less than ideal situations in The Low Lantern. These women may begin the ordination process to become a Star Sister themselves. After ten years of servitude to the ministry, they are blessed with a ‘magical gift’ as practising magic is part of the Nine Tenets. This religious order has the highest turnover of clerics as magic is seen to be an article of faith, without it they cannot truly serve Mystra fully. Of the Ministry’s members, a large proportion is made up of children or other Star Sisters that grew up in the Ministry of Mystra. The higher-up sisters are far more strict with those raised in the Ministry than those who were rescued later in life. The Nine Tenets (representing the nine stars of Mystra) follow closely to the Guild’s seven laws but with an additional two added on specifically for the Star Sisters;
Anonymity must be kept, for the safety of the Sisters.
Distractions are to be avoided, for they make one susceptible to dark influences.
