3 - Rolling and Dice

This article details the nature of rolling dice and the specific dice you'll encounter in the game!

Taking Actions

In a game that emphasizes choice, your actions are at the very heart of the narrative. Much like you in the real world, your character can take any action within their reasonable capabilities. That is to say; Anything you feel your character could try to do is fair game - and you aren't locked to a specific list of things you're allowed to try. When taking actions that could have consequences, such as leaping across a gap, crafting an item, or attacking an adversary, your Game Master might ask you to make an Action Roll.

Action Rolls are likely the most common rolls you'll make in the game, and are integral to adding a layer of risk and chance to the narrative. It's essentially what makes the game…well, a game and not just a book you're reading with your friends.

Success and Failure

After your Game Master asks you to make an Action Roll, they'll set a “Difficulty”. This is the number your roll needs to meet in order for your action to succeed. Typically, the higher the number, the more challenging an action is meant to be in the story. Your Game Master might tell you this number before you roll, or keep it a secret to add tension to a scene. There's no rules on how they conduct Difficulty, so it will likely vary, depending on your Game Master.

Roll below the Difficulty, and your action fails, with your Game Master narrating the consequences - but roll a number equal-to or above that Difficulty, and your action succeeds!

Advantage and Disadvantage

The final component to Rolling, Advantage and Disadvantage, is a way of representing assistance or obstacles during a roll. Whenever this is active you roll a 6 sided dice. If you have Advantage, you add the result to your total, subtracting it instead if you have Disadvantage. If you have multiple sources of Advantage or Disadvantage, you add multiple 6 sided dice to the roll. Lastly, if you get both Advantage AND Disadvantage on a roll, they'll cancel each other out.

Dice

Nether uses many types of dice, including the typical 6-Sided die. The most common dice you'll need to roll in this game is twelve sided, often called a D12. The rules of the game will always tell you what kind of dice you'll need to roll, but for general actions, you'll always need 2 D12's.
