Misery Loves Company

Misanthei is perhaps the most unfortunate being ever created. As the Goddess of Despair, Misfortune, and Suicide, she is oft-forgotten and rarely mentioned among divines and mortals alike. Her worship is desperately obscure on Sol, and she is one of the few divines to have more followers elsewhere. She is particularly associated with the Shadowfell, a desolate, dismal realm that bleeds into her own realm, known as The Frozen Void. Misanthei has been described as the Lady of Desolation and the Saint of Sorrow. She is said to walk with those who suffer from depression, anxiety, dementia, misanthropy, and other disorders that sever ties between mortals and the rest of society. With few followers to call her own and even fewer friends among her divine peers, she has also come to be known as the Lonely God. It is difficult to determine her whereabouts or tendencies, as few mortals or divines have ever cared enough to figure it out, let alone document it. It's usually surmised she wanders her frigid void, searching either for someone to talk to or someone to kill her.

Children of Desolation

While Misanthei has few followers, one race that knows her well is the Shadar-kai. A mysterious race of elf-kin from the Shadowfell, the Shadar-kai are a people marked by the sorrow that follows Misanthei. The story of their creation has been lost to time. But today, they are known to either be associated with Misanthei or Nyx, whom they call the Raven Queen. Of the clans who follow Misanthei, their existence is bleak and aimless. Scattered throughout the Frozen Void, they huddle around sources of light or a special incense that produces a reprieve from the anguish that radiates throughout the realm. Families often die off from despair or grief, either seeking their own end or losing the will to live and wandering into the void, never to be heard from again. Few Shadar-kai escape the Frozen Void. Those who do are sometimes begged to and tasked by Misanthei with finding the answers to the questions she seeks so futilely, particularly her inquiry about what love is.
