Stellar Neighborhood
A stellar neighborhood is a grouping of shards and realms that typically remain in proximity to one or more stellar bodies as they travel through the cosmos. Though different schools of thought conflict on the exact groupings of shards, this classification is often constructed using guidelines and not distinct rules and laws as it is a conventional tool for navigating the Nebula and not precisely observable theory.
Guidelines for Stellar Neighborhoods
- Neighbors typically share a distinct array of fundaments, these are known as neighborhood fundaments if they are unaminous.
- They share close space within the influence of a stellar body and are generally associated with it.
- Shards have a high rate of collision with eachother.
- Shards share a high volume of connections with eachother.
- Borders of a stellar territory can be dilineated by it's enclosure by expanses of void.
- The boundaries of stellar neighborhoods are soft dilineations and can overlap, creating liminal territory between them.
Polities
Stellar Neighborhoods are largely defined by the polities of the people who live in them. Frequently they self identify in this way to form coalitions of shard nations, especially in the face of imperial forces that might demand tribute or forcefully colonize their shards. As logistics and fortification becomes more important common connections are made and the bonds between the realms create a more robust and blended culture.
In a more imperial civilization, neighborhoods are more akin to territories and may be assigned a grouping based on the industrial needs of the core shards. Neighborhoods might be associated strongly with an agrarian speciality, an industrial center or as an urban sattelite region to the core worlds that hold hegemony there. Connections may instead be focused on creating direct paths back to the core worlds, and subversive elements might create more subtle connections to combat the rulers using guerilla tactics.
