Stonewell

Stonewell is the most rough and tumble location in all of Gerlander. It sits off of one of the tributary rivers that feed into The Brâgha Rast Canyon, the Canyon that forms the southern border with Romalia. It is built out of a pit mine, like most cities in Gerlander, but don't bother with a cable car system of any kind. Rather, they rely on an aqueduct system. These channels run between the sides of the pit and and function like log flumes.    The city itself is very close to the water. The Tributary was diverted to allow clean water to flow through a primary channel in the descending spiral that is the main road. Waterwheels hooked to winches pull gondolas up stream while gravity pulls them down. Most commonly, the streams and aqueduct system are used to transport the city's unique stones up from the quarries and out to the Thunder Rail station on the northern rim of the city. They are prized for their city's uniquely pure deposits of limestone. This makes their Marble some of the purest white in the world! They use this as their primary building materiel along with a copious helping of redwood that grows well in the area.    Some of the finest stonemasons in the world live and work here. Due to their proximity to the border, travelers will be more likely to find Elves of all kinds mixed in with the population. Travelers are likely to find some of the most beautiful and intricate statues they have ever seen anywhere in the world!

Demographics

Being so close to the border of Romalia, there is a not insubstantial population of Elves that live here. However there are still more dwarves and gnomes living here than other races.

Government

The government of Stonewell is run by a few noble houses within the city.

Defences

The only "defence" Stonewell has is the guard of the individual families.

Industry & Trade

Stonewell, true to its name, is a leading exporter of masonry and raw stone.

Infrastructure

The main way most enter the city is via the thunder rail or by paved roads. Inside the primary mode of transport is by raised waterways and aqueducts.

Assets

Umbrite is a still active quarry. So much so that the expansion has given it an hour glass kind of shape. They mine tens of tons of uniquely clear white marble and white granite from beneath the city every month; along with some quarts crystal and Iron oxide.

Points of interest

  • Debate Hall: A nice way of saying, Dueling Ring. Here, the noble houses like to settle their debates with the blade, pistol or spell.

Architecture

Strangely, for Gerlander, most buildings are made of the sturdy redwood trees that grow in abundance around them. Most of the stone they mine is sent off to fortifications/other cities domestically, and internationally. Their aqueduct system and Debate Hall is where a majority of their stone is used.
