The Watchliight Keep

The Watchlight Keep is Highmist Haven’s oldest structure — an imposing oceanside bastion that has guarded the haven’s mists and waters since before formal records. Its massive beacon tower once burned day and night, a promise of safe harbor and a warning to pirates.

Purpose / Function

  • Original Purpose: A warning post and rally point against raiders.
  • Current Purpose: Houses Highmist Haven’s watch commanders, main armory, and sea wardens. Still lights the beacon to guide ships through mist at night.

Design

  • A sturdy square keep rising four stories, built from heavy riverstone.
  • Attached beacon tower extends another three stories higher, topped by a great enchanted flame bowl.

Entries

  • Reinforced oak doors studded with sea iron.
  • Postern gates on the river side for quick patrol launches.

Sensory & Appearance

  • The air tastes of metal and old ash.
  • Heavy bootsteps echo up spiral stairs.
  • Murals on walls depict past defenders and sea battles.

Denizens

  • Captain of the Watchlight, sea wardens in chain and blue cloaks, young lookouts always climbing the tower.
  • Several bonded mist hounds who patrol the outer yard.

Contents & Furnishings

  • An armory with racks of polearms and heavy crossbows.
  • War room filled with sea charts, flagged markers for trade flotillas and any suspected pirate sightings.
  • Barracks hung with old banners.

Valuables

  • A small vault under the keep holds emergency coin reserves for hiring mercenaries or paying ransoms.
  • A collection of old honor blades, trophies from victories over sea corsairs.

Hazards & Traps

  • If overrun, collapsible iron grilles can be dropped down stair wells to seal off floors.
  • Defensive runes on doors flash hot if tampered with.

Special Properties

  • The beacon flame is permanently enchanted — cannot be doused by wind, rain, or mundane effort.
  • Light cuts unusually well through thick mist, visible for leagues.

Alterations

  • Added side towers over the last two centuries for better angles on the expanding town.
  • Recently integrated warning bells tied magically to city guard posts.

Architecture

  • Heavy fortress style — thick walls, few windows on lower levels.
  • Beacon tower is ringed with spiral ironwork depicting stylized mist patterns.

Defenses

  • Arrow slits, murder holes, and reinforced inner doors.
  • Quick-draw chains for closing portcullises over the docks.

History

  • Withstood a month-long siege by pirate lords in 209 AR, famously holding out until allied forces arrived.
  • Traditionally where new captains of the watch swear their oaths, beneath the ever-burning light.

Always slightly cool and echoing inside, with faint drafts carrying the scent of wet stone and old lamp oil. The beacon flame atop the tower still casts a wide golden circle of security over the waters.
