Windborne Whalers

Overview

Society Name:

Windborne Whalers

Society Concept:

The Windborne Whalers are a rugged, storm-forged seafaring society who dwell along the wind-lashed coasts and high cliff islands of the northern seas. Known for their mastery of deep-ocean navigation and their relentless pursuit of massive leviathans, the Windborne are the primary producers of whale oil in the world—a resource essential for lighting, industry, and the ritual fires of Ashfell.

Their culture is built around endurance, precision, and cooperation. Windborne whaling crews spend months at sea in specialized longships reinforced for ice, storms, and leviathan impacts. Each hunt is a dangerous undertaking requiring harpoon-singers, storm-readers, deck-mages, and cliff-divers working in tight coordination. Whaling success determines communal prosperity, so bravery and sacrifice at sea are the highest virtues.

The society’s settlements cling to the coasts: wooden stilt-towns, cliff harbors, and wind-towers that guide ships home through the fog. Homes and halls are built of driftwood, whale bone, and storm-scarred timber. Songs of the hunt, memorial carvings, and sea-omens shape their traditions.

Windborne trade routes connect them to many cultures, but their most vital relationship is with the Cauterai. Leviathan oil is the fuel that keeps Ashfell’s ritual flames burning, making the Windborne indispensable to Cauterai survival—and giving the Windborne considerable diplomatic leverage.

A people defined by the ocean’s danger and bounty, the Windborne Whalers live between storm and sea, navigating the thin line between survival, honor, and extinction.
