Ashfell
Ashfell is the ancient capital of the Cauterai , built in concentric terraces of black basalt carved directly into the volcanic cliffs of their homeland. At its heart rises the Pillar of Unmaking—a towering column of cold blue fire that devours magic itself. The Cauterai believe this flame is the source of their people and the instrument of their divine purpose.
The city is arranged around the Pillar in ritual rings, with bridges, stairways, and platforms designed for processions, purification rites, and The Rite of Ashbirth —an initiation in which young Cauterai expose their latent magical affinity and allow the Pillar to burn it away. This process awakens their inner cold-fire and marks their passage into adulthood.
Ashfell is quiet, solemn, and monumental. Its towers glow faintly with pale flame, casting shifting cerulean light across obsidian walls. Statues of past Cauterai guardians watch over the city, and faint embers drift through the air, drawn toward the ever-burning Pillar. To outsiders, Ashfell is awe-inspiring and alien: a place where magic dies and purpose is born.
