Reuniclau ('roon-ah-clah')

These deep sea dwelling Mystimon are rarely seen on the surface, though they do come on land once in a while. Most of the time they spend their lives in the deep oceans, mostly along the bottom of the sea. They are crustacean Mystimon, most related to insects. Their closest land-dwelling cousin appear to be Beetlex. They are large and red to brownish red, have six legs and two more limbs that end in claws, one of them larger than the other. They use these claws to scoop through the sand on the bottom of the sea searching for small clams and other prey.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Reuniclau is a crustacean Mystimon with a long tail, six legs, two limbs ending in one small claw and one large claw, and two long antenna upon its head. It is best described as like a lobster.

Ecology and Habitats

For the most part Reuniclau spend their lives in the deep ocean, along the sea floor. Once in a while they come up on to land for various reasons. One of those is to lay their young, which they usually do in caves, preferably in caves with at least a small pool of water.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Reuniclau prey mostly on shellfish, which it scrounges through the sand for, either along the beach or along the sea floor, using their large claw the scoop through the sand and sift through it with their smaller claw.

Biological Cycle

During the dry seasons, Reuniclau will come upon land, when they will lay their young, usually in caves with at least a small pool of water, and they will spend a lot of time scrounging through the sand along the beach for shellfish like clams. When the wet season comes, they return to the ocean.

Behaviour

They usually are very docile creatures. They tend to not mind the presence of people in the least, and in fact seem used to people. They are very solitary creatures for the most part, except when they breed. When they feel threatened, they have actually been observed scooping a pile of sand with their large claw and tossing it at the attacker.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They are largely solitary creatures, except when they breed.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Some people, particularly nobles, enjoy Reuniclau as a delicacy. In the Quatrica Islands, this practice is outlawed.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

For the most part they are found in the deep oceans, particularly around the Ocean Kingdoms. When they come up on land, they will usually be found along beaches in western Almahna or the Quatrica Islands.

Discovery

Notes from Doctor Ivan Sanderson.

"For months, I had heard stories from many people of these large bug like creatures coming from the sea and on to land. I never believed them. But then again I had seen many wondrous things in my research. So despite my skepticism, Jane Dawn and I went out to the Quatrica Islands, where they had been most seen, and staked out for weeks along the beach, waiting for a glimpse of these creatures, never believing they would ever emerge. I can't quite explain my skepticism. It is simply that in my experience, most Mystimon could be neatly divided between land, sea, and air and rarely if ever crossed between. The one exception to this rule I have found is Hammerox. Never did I think there could be another.

And yet there, on the third day, it was. A large reddish brown bug with one large claw and one smaller one emerged from the sea and came on to land. But why? What reason could this Mystimon have for doing this? We observed it as it lumbered along the sandy beach and into a cave. Inside the cave, where there was a small pool of water, it appeared to give birth to its young in this small pool. Marvelous! Simply fascinating! And then it continued on land for a good long time, scrounging through the sand on the beach for what seemed to be various kinds of shellfish. So that's what they eat! Simply fascinating.

It would appear I may be incorrect in my previous assertion. But that is science! Sometimes your theories could be completely wrong, and it's just as exciting when they are as when they are correct."
