Daemond ('day-mend')
These deadly creatures are the stuff of nightmares. They are ghoulish creatures which will prey on anyone and anything. Their razor sharp teeth can sheer through the thickest of hides in nothing flat, as can their razor sharp claws. But the most terrifying thing about them is that they look almost humanoid! In fact they could literally have once been people!
Basic Information
Anatomy
They have four limbs, but to call them quadrupedal would be missing the point. While they do run around on all fours like a quadrupedal creature, they are very humanoid-like in shape. Their skeletal frame is gaunt and slender. They have long razor sharp claws, about 7.6 to 15.2 cm in length, and a jaw full of long razor sharp teeth, almost impossibly long for their jaws.
Biological Traits
Daemond Fever Daemonds have a disease they can pass through bites which eventually results in the victim turning, themselves, into a Daemond. First it manifests in a high fever, but then their body temperature begins to drop astronomically, to the point they feel cold, as though being overtaken by hyperthermia, and may exhibit all of the symptoms of therein. Approximately 12 to 18 hours later, the change is complete.
Colour
Darkness
Ecology and Habitats
These creatures are highly adaptable and can live just about anywhere in the world. They are strictly nocturnal though and only come out at night.
Dietary Needs and Habits
They are very much carnivorous creatures, but also ravenous and will consume almost anything, even digging into rubbish cans. . . and devouring the can itself. On prey they seem to favour the cranial portion.
Behaviour
These creatures are highly aggressive, highly ravenous. They seem to be built for one thing and one thing alone, to consume flesh.
Additional Information
Social Structure
It is unknown whether these creatures even have much of a social structure in their own groups. They do appear to hunt in groups, sometimes in hordes up to a hundred or more, especially in the land of Gothica. The Maji Guard's GHOST patrols deal with these hordes in other nations to try to keep the populations as low as possible.
Facial characteristics
The terrifying thing about these creatures is their very humanoid-like face, but twisted and horrific. Their jaws are filled with really long razor sharp teeth, impossibly long for their jaws, their eye sockets sunken and their nose almost gone. Their eyes also glow a bright red.
Discovery
From the notes of Doctor Ivan Sanderson.
"The last thing I wanted was to track down the rumours surrounding this creature. I wanted nothing to do with the feverish nightmares something like this can induce in even the hardiest of people. But I was tracked down by a woman who cried hysterically for someone to listen to her. I had to hear her out for my wife would never let me hear the end of it if I hadn't.
She tells me that a few nights prior, she and her beloved were walking home from a nearby town when they were beset upon by these creatures from the shadows. She described them as humanoid like, with long razor claws and long sharp teeth, with eyes that glowed red. Seemed like something straight out of my own nightmares. But something about her demeanor and the way she told the story told me she was not making this up. Could be in how she described how her beloved tried to defend her to these things and lost his own life as a result so that she may live to tell the tale. Either way, my heart broke for her.
So I went out that night with two of my research assistants, including one woman who has become like a second inspiration for me, like my wife before her. She is a remarkable young woman, only around 18, her name is Jane Dawn. I swear to my wife every day there is nothing going on between us. I am unsure whether she believes me.
What I did not expect was to encounter these things almost straight away. The very first night. But indeed we did. And by the Gods they are even more terrifying than the woman described. Their skin is grey and taut and leathery. Their frames are gaunt and horrific. And unlike people, they seem to crawl around on all fours like some kind of terrifying animal. One of my research assistants was injured by one of these creatures. They are in bad shape. We have to get him back to town as soon as possible. I have no idea if he is going to make it.
Sometime later. . . I regret to write that he did not make it, sadly and tragically. I had no idea that he was Jane's beloved. But. . . hours later he started to turn. He began to change slowly, growing sharp teeth and long claws, and. . . in horrific irony he tried to come after Jane, as though he had lost all self control. I had to shoot him, for her. To save her life. She tells me I did the right thing. But why does that not make me feel any better?"
