Chillant

These small ants the size of Naekos terrorize the Frostelvan of the Polar Lands. They are known to create nests the size of small hills in the ice and snow, and are constantly coming into cities and villages in search of food. Their sting can freeze and chill even the hardiest of people. Normally they pay no mind to people, seemingly driven by one directive, to bring food back to the nest. But if they are prevented from this task in any way, they will aggressively lash out.   Thus the people of the Polar Lands have had to learn to deal with them, either leaving them be or hiring adventurers to wipe out the nests. Most would opt for the second.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are tiny ant Mystimon with six legs, large blue compound eyes, and large pincers, which they use to pick up food to bring back to the nest.

Biological Traits

Colour

They are classified as Water colour Mystimon, specifically Frost.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They will gather just about any type of food to bring back to the nest, but seem to favour any sugary types of foods. It is thought that the sugar helps them regulate their body temperature in the frozen climate.

Behaviour

They have a hive mind and typically are driven to whatever singular tasks given to them by the Queen of the nest.

Additional Information

Social Structure

They have a hive mind social structure. There is usually at least one queen, sometimes more, in a single nest, with a few warrior Chillants which guard the nest, and all the rest are workers who go out to forage for food to bring back to the nest.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They are only found in cold climates, usually close to or in the polar regions.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have heat vision, an adaptation they have gained for living in the frozen climates.

Discovery

From the notes of Doctor Ivan Sanderson.   "I had heard of these reports of what could only be described as an icey cousin of Inferants for many years, but could scarcely believe them. I always thought them to be myths. After all, how could such insect creatures survive in such cold climates? It seemed almost impossible to believe. But finally in the winter of 1338, I had had enough of the reports that I boarded a Vikarahn fishing ship from Sapphire Port and headed up North. I would arrive finally at the docks of Icereach a few short weeks later.   It is here that I gathered stories of the alleged creatures for weeks on end from folks from all walks of life. I of course arrived at a bad time, for the Winter King still ruled these shores, and I had to keep my nose down and avoid his attention.   Soon I would gather up supplies and head up to around Thrav'gren River, where a host of rivers pointed to where a nest could potentially be. The journey was cold and arduous. Not only did I have the weather and snow to contend with but my host would also need to keep well out of sight of the Skulm patrols.   When finally we arrived at the river, I could scarcely believe it. There wasn't just one nest, but scores of them! And there were so many of these ants that they swarmed our campsite in a matter of hours. They seem to operate much like the Inferants in Almahna, in a hive social structure, truly fascinating. They are indeed an icey cousin of Inferants, I surmise. I would classify them as otherwise a new species of Mystimon. May our trip back be safe from the Skulms. I wish not to earn the Winter King's ire."
