Burroworm
There are many things to fear in the hot sandy desert of Northern Almahna. One of those things is the sheer dry heat. Another are the wild Mystimon found here, some of which can grow up to massive sizes, able to swallow a person whole. These are some such creatures. They are so feared that the architects of Calrune built the city with a wall of sandstone beneath the sand that stretches all around the city perimeters, in order to stop Burroworms from being able to get into the city and cause havoc. However with their numbers dwindling in recent years, people are growing less and less afraid.
Basic Information
Anatomy
They are huge sand-burrowing worm beasts with no eyes and large round moths with four pincer-like beaks. They also have long squid-like tentacles that they can shoot forth from their mouth grabbing prey and dragging it into their waiting jaws. Each of the tentacles also have long curved spikes that dig into their prey.
Ecology and Habitats
They are only native to the Northern Almahnan desert, thankfully. But they are terrors that everyone should fear.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Burroworms are carnivorous feeding machines that will consume anyone or anything that is stupid enough to cross their path.
Behaviour
They behave as feeding machine monsters that consume anyone and everything that crosses their path. Once they catch your scent, they will chase you don't to the ends of the desert and keep on you until they either lose interest and find something else more interesting, or they catch you.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Burroworms are solitary creatures and their numbers are small, getting smaller and smaller with each passing year.
Facial characteristics
They have no eyes and a huge round mouth with four pincer-like beaks.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
They are only found in the sandy desert of Northern Almahna.
Average Intelligence
They behave as mindless feeding machines, and don't appear to have much more intelligence beyond that.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
It is thought they they can sense vibrations through the sand and that is how they get around and track prey.
Society
For many years in the early 2nd Age, they would burrow their way right into the streets of Calrune on a regular basis. Eventually the Fae'roh of the time ordered the architects to construct an underground wall around the perimeter of the city to keep Burroworms out and protect the people. However, due to the catacombs and the ruins of Old Kairus beneath Calrune, the wall only extends about half as far under the sand as originally conceived. Still, it has managed to keep the beasts at bay all these hundreds of years since.
