Wolf
Wolves are often referred to as the wild hunters due to fact that they are observed to live in groups of 4 or 5 and use their numbers to strategically take down their prey. These groups are called a pack.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Wolves are quadruped carnivorous mammals. Their slender figures are covered in fur and allow them to move quickly and quietly through an assortment of environments. Their faces are defined by a long pointed black snout. Their mouths are filled with sharp fangs perfect for tearing flesh. They have small round yellow eyes and large pointed ears allowing for refined hearing.
A wolf's torso is flexible and cylindrical in shape. Their front is just a bit wider than their rear which then ends with a bushy tail.
Each one of their four legs is surprisingly powerful. Each leg ends with a heavy paw capable of crushing smaller prey but, their preferred method of attack is to use their retractable claws to slash at their target. Each paw is has five digits four of which are equal in length and can be found facing forward, meanwhile, the fifth claw is smaller and is found on the inside of the of the paw almost like a thumb. Since wolves are found all around Terra, it seems they have adapted to their surroundings by earning different colors of fur.
Cootkatou: Dark brown coats. Known as forest or wood wolves.
Waugmala: Light brown coats. Known as red wolves.
Tunardun: Light grey or white coats. Known as grey or silver wolves.
Elsewhere: Brown or Grey coats. Known as prairie or field wolves.
Genetics and Reproduction
Wolves are mammals and, in addition, have been observed to mate for life. During crossover between the season of cold to the season of warmth, the mother will most likely be carrying a pup. During this time, the pack, which is usually quite active, will remain quiet staying in a single location until the pup is born. The pack will only resume its normal activity once the pup is capable of walking on its own.
Growth Rate & Stages
When a pup is born, it cannot walk and is blind for the first 3 t 4 days. The mother will coddle the newborn for warmth and protection while the father (and other males) hunt for food.
Only to weeks after its birth, a pup will usually be seen walking alongside the rest of the pack. The pup is still weak and remains close to its mother, limiting the activity of the pack as a whole.
By the end of the third week, the pack can be observed performing its usual activity with the pup in toe. The pup has entered infancy.
After only one year, a wolf can now be considered a matured adult. At this stage, it is common to see them search for a mate of their own. This tends to happen when one pack meets another. The two groups will exchange members in a ritualistic fashion. Each contender must somehow prove their worthiness of joining the other pack by impressing both a mate and the pack leader. How this is accomplished is still unclear and is believed to be an instinctual behavior unique to the wolves.
Sadly, should a contender fail, it may be left abandoned by not just the new pack, but their original group as well.
Thus explains the occasional siting of lone wolves.
Ecology and Habitats
Wolves have been known to live all around Terra. However, some areas are much more densely populated than others. Wolves are common in wooded areas and as such, the Cootkatou Region is unsurprisingly full of these animals. Other Regions of note are the extreme opposites of Waugmala and Tunardun for their unique breeds.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Wolves are carnivores and prey on a number of other animals. To feed a pack, they often hunt for prey bigger in size than they are as individuals. These include; elk, boar, emu and sometimes horses.
They have been known to eat smaller prey as well when necessary. Animals like rabbits/hares.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Wolves live in packs lead by one deemed to be the strongest among the group. (It is believed this is determined by the physical strength of the individual.)
Should a wolf be deemed as a liability to the pack, it may very well be ostracized from the group and left to fend for themselves.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
All around Terra.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Wolves have an acute sense of smell and hearing. They use these heightened senses to both attack and defend themselves. Additionally, wolves have a natural instinct to follow the strongest of the pack. A wolf's intelligence is not to be underestimated. In a pack, these animals have been observed to share some sort of communication among their peers which is why they are some of the most dangerous animals to encounter in the wild.
