Brimstone City Map

City Guide:
  The Hollows
  Upper Hollows
The first mines the original populace carved out Kevleyan Sulfur for use in the first gunpowders. Nowadays, the wind howls through them on stormy nights and sounds out a terrifying melody. The homeless and many gangs have taken these old mines as homes.
  The Redmines
The current iteration of Kevley Powder mines, they are hot, smoky and constantly at threat of digging into the molten core of the volcano. Beware of Red Lung.
  Black Alley
Located somewhere in the hollows is an old cave that leads right out into a forest just over a river that flows into Rhodania. It's filled with gangs who vie for control over the black market and smuggling that takes place here.   The Westring
  Trader's Terrace
For goods that don't pertain to the powder trade, the people will come to the Westring. The shops here provide clothing, furniture, home goods, repairs and the like. The guilds' power are less here, and what little influence they hold here is usually spent in attaining the services of the best crafters in the terrace.
  The Ashwood
The only forest inside the mountain. Exiled elves from the Tanriad and Dalriad dwell here in the trees and rarely step down. The loggers are in constant territorial disputes with them and more than one fire fight has broken out. The wood here is used for construction and crafting all across the city.
  Ashlane
A unique part of town where once the main road to the central islands lay. Lumber from the Ashwood which used to span the entire western edge of the crater was brought into the main city for development. Nowadays, it still has some remnant of that, though the forest is now a shadow of itself. Lumber carts are dragged by some of the few horses in the city from the Ashwood to the Trader's Terrace, the Cinderfields or one of the small ports for transfer to wherever in Brimstone construction is being done.
  Valdekov School of Magic (Abandoned)
Before the Ashford academy was founded by Chief Arcanter Acaellius, a mage from Threnland once attempted to open his own school of magic. He had a large following and may have become a major force in the city if not for the Guilds boxing him out. While the Ashford academy is in many ways a far better institution, Valdekov's students and former staff remember him fondly and blame the guildmasters for goading him until he took matters to their grisly end, the charred remains of the old school have remained untouched ever since.

Spirestone
Brimstone's elite and wealthy live here, with villas that overlook the Ashen Sea and Brimstone itself. Each villa is a little slice of paradise it is said. But the high walls and the number of Harlequins have shown that even here in the free city, old class woes have reappeared.
  The Eastring
  Cragtown
The working class residential quarter. It's only a step above the Hollows, but it's something. Mages not connected to the Powder Guilds who eke out their living in the mines or delivering goods between the businesses, and if they're lucky, the jobs the Powder guilds don't deign important enough to oversee personally. Most inhabitants are Kavri or humans with little magical aptitude were still banished from their lands for even having any ability at all.
  The Ruined Prince Tavern
Rumor has it that the original founder of this tavern was a disgraced prince who upon being discovered to have magic was banished from his kingdom. He struck out for Brimstone and, here, where his influence meant little, he set up a tavern and used his true passion for cooking to provide for people. Most people think the owner made it up, but the food here is indeed exceptional for a place like Cragtown.
  Blackpier
The small riverwalk along cragtown is fully of disreputables from the Hollows, and full of con artists and thieves so they say. The City Watch have battled the reputation for years but unless they were to drive out the folk of the hollows, they'll always come here.
  Briscollier Bay
Briscollier is the middle class part of Brimstone's residential area, where the multi-family lodgings and rented housing is found. Lots of good restaurants and cafes are found here, and especially seafood, though it is mostly shipped in from the Kevleyan Locks as the fish from the Ashen Seal do not taste very good.
  The Waterworks
Aptly named, the Waterworks is where the aquatic infrastructure of the city is overseen. From shipping to canal repairs, it's all done here. While officially not part of any of the guilds, their presence and influence is still felt. The workers have formed a sort of union here are represented by Boss Holladay, a crusty old sailor banished from his homeland of Nikothia, which despite being accepting of magic could not accept what he'd done.
The city depends heavily on Powder Exports and it can only do this thanks to the aquatic infrastructure provided by the Waterworks. Barges, Water-Taxis, pleasure boats, ferries and other watercraft come out of the shipyards here and serve the entire city.
The Undertow is the only way Powder can be sent out of the city. It sits over the mouth of the River Threnn which flows down the mountain and reaches the borders of Rhodania, Demria, Starland and Thrennland. Each border crossing holds the only outposts of Brimstone where mages can still be free. Those who man these posts are absolutely loyal to the city and guarded by the most elite of the City Watch. Hydromancers accompany the Powder Barges to help transport them back up the river and re-enter via the Southgate locks, which is built over a small tributary that feeds into the River Threnn from the other side of the Waterworks.   Southgate
The only terminal to enter Brimstone by water, the Southgate is the end of the lock system that comes up from the River Threnn that passes by Mt. Kevley. It's counterpart, the Undertow, is the lock system that allows travel down the mountain and is supposedly the only official way out of the city by the south.
  Vandemann Wharf
The main shipyard for Brimstone where watercraft of all kinds is built and maintained. The Silvermaine Powder Guild holds heavy influence here and over the waterworks in general.
  The Strand
The main worksite for the Waterworks industry. It is also heavily guarded by the City Watch who oversee the Undertow and Southgate to monitor all trade and travel entering in and leaving the city.
  Cinderfields
Rivaling only the Powder District itself in size, the Cinderfields are the expanse of farmland that feeds the entire city, save for that which is imported from the lowlands. Borne of necessity during the early days, it has since become a vital piece of the city infrastructure to ensure the citizens could never be starved out by those beyond the mountain walls.
The farm-magi know this and exert the largest degree of independence from the Powder Guilds as without cooperation and freedom, the guilds won't eat.
Lording over this little fiefdom is the Farmer's Guild, led by Boss Sutland. While a guild in name, they almost work like a gang, pressuring anyone outside of the guild to join. There is no room for independent farmers in Brimstone. Sutland's dealings seem to be overlooked by the city watch and rumors have it he's a close friend of the infamous "Inspector".
  Cinderhome
While most farms have bunkhouses for the workers and foremen, they all actually live in Cinderhome. During the cold winter, they gather together in this central part of the Cinderfield peninsula. Here small houses for their families are found, and the farmer's school where the children learn the art of agricultural magic and work. There's only one tavern here, the Ashen Ox, and it is rarely visited by citizens outside of Cinderfields. The pride and joy of the farmers is the Ghardantalla, the warehouse and meeting house for the Farmer's guild. Boss Sutland, a Tristanian by birth, holds court here.
  Old Brimstone
While it may be called "Old" Brimstone, it remains the burning heart of the city. Comprised of three islands, split into a multitude of official city districts, Old Brimstone is where the magic quite literally happens. The islands, along with what is now Cinderfields once formed an inner ring that formed after a volcanic eruption. Rainfall and long habitation have eroded way the full circle that was once here.
The seldom used but official name for them is Kerenak Inel, Threnish for "Red Ring Islands."
Old Brimstone is split into eight districts, with the Cinderfields and Waterworks considered separate entities.
  Powder District
The largest district lies on West Kerenak, where the island has not been divided by numerous canals as the eastern half has.
Here the Powder Guilds in their walled off enclaves leer at each other as they craft gunpowder that is an envy of the world.
Along the western edge of the island, the Coalstone, Arcane League, Alchemist Alliance and Silvermaine powder guilds have their private campuses, each with a private marina.
The largest, and oldest enclave, that of the Kevleyan Powder Guild lies on the inner edge of the island, overlooking the rest of the city and Pirosel Park. Between the enclaves, associates, friends, spies and lackeys make their home clustered around the walls of the enclave like a lordling's village in Rhodania. Some inns and taverns can be found here, but more often than not they're only patronized by guild spies trying to feel out the competition. Most inhabitants prefer East Kerenak where Apothecary Square and the Freemage District offer far better fare and company.
  Apothecary Square
Originally, this was the workplace of the precursor to the Alchemist Alliance. The potionmakers and healers used this location to care for the newcomer mages and craft whatever concoctions they could to assist the fledgling settlement. Eventually, the alchemists returned to experimentation and formed the Alliance which now stands as one of the Powder Guilds.
These days the square is a high class venue where fine potions and mixtures can be bought and sold, though not a single store is entirely free of the Alchemist Alliance's gaze. The City Hospital is located here, mostly a free clinic, despite the rise of the elite class, the hospital remains free to all and serves anyone who comes through its doors.
In the center of the square is a decently sized park where municipal events are held. The most popular is the Mage Market which meets once a month where wares from all over the city are sold. From scrolls to rifles, you can find it there, in Apothecary Square.   Freemage District
When you're middle class in Brimstone, but don't wish to work directly for a guild, then you go to the Freemage District. Here the condominiums overshadow the various shops and stalls that line the streets. Here the independents ply their trade, though the guilds hunt down any new developments to try and purchase or steal innovations for themselves. On the whole however, it is generally the favored district as it has all sorts of different foods from all over Orlessia as well as the Empire. There are mid grade shops here, nothing too special but you might find a diamond amongst the mundane. There are rumors that exiled master crafters who refuse to bow to the influence of the guilds live here, amongst the crowded masses.
The Brimstone Orphanage can also be found here, as the most notable landmark.
  Scribers Row
The most popular destination in all Brimstone, Scriber's Row is the seat of the city's internal economy. Instead of exports or imitations of their homelands like the shops in the Freemage District, Scriber's Row is all about Brimstone. Everything here is "authentically" Brimstone with mixed fashions and foods made in the melting pot the city is. The North End is all business with newspapers, grocers, raw goods, and research & development laboratories lining the streets. As its name suggests, parchment and paper dominate the sector with many inscription shops and scroll vendors to be found.
The South End is entertainment with the city's infamous smokehouses and most popular baths and restaurants. While some boutique shops can be found here, it's all about the shows. Theaters and gamehouses are also here, while the great Brimstone Opera stands proud over it all.
  Guilder's Square
The administrative heart of the city, nestled between the rest of the districts is Guilder's Square. While there are some small shops on the outer edges, the square is dominated by the Guild Hall where the Powder Masters deliberate over the laws of the city and the City Watchtower which gazes down upon the city at large and is the highest building in the city.
The Bank of Brimstone, a relatively new organization can also be found here while the Ashford Academy which educates the next generation of Brimstone born mages to learn their craft and skills can be found to one side of the Guild Hall.
The last place of note is the Brimstone Sanctum which houses the Church of Brimstone and the Healer's Infirmary. The Church has shrines for every god of both the Orlessian and Imperial pantheons, (though the imperial displays are cheaper and far less well maintained) and a handful of clerics for each pantheon who do their best to commune with the many gods.
The Infirmary is attended to by healers of many paths, but they all serve the gods. Unlike the Hospital in Apothecary Square, the Infirmary has many private rooms for treatment and recovery. They also prefer healing magic over the alchemical remedies of the Hospital.   Blackford Gunworks
One of the newer Districts, the rise of the firearm has swallowed many of the old smiths and artisans who used to work here. Only on the outskirts can one still find one of the old masters who make melee weapons instead of guns. Most streets are lined with firearm and firearm accessory shops with the odd outfitter squeezed in promising protective gear against their neighbors' weaponry.
The shops are nearly entirely run or owned by the Kevleyan and Coalstone Powder Guilds who fiercely compete here though currently the Kevleyans reign supreme.
  The Iron Rook District
On the northern part of the central city lies the billowing spires of the Iron Rook. The Industrial District rumbles between the Powder District across the Ashen Sea and the Gunworks to the south. Using the volcanic pocket below for heat these metalworks help siphon the mountain's unrest to forge the fiery heart of Brimstone Industry. The metals produced here are used in construction, the nearby Gunworks or export. The Forge Magi are the masters here, using their skills in pyromancy in a manner entirely alien to the rest of the world.
