Psriikan
Overview
The Psriikans are the founder species of the Psriikan Choreographed Constellation.Biology and Appearance
Physiology
The Psriikans are reptilian in nature, possessing the unique ability to store large amounts of heat energy in specialized glands under their skin, which can then be gradually released into their body to keep up body temperature or immediately expunged, releasing a warm, smelly cloud around their body. This trait served a dual purpose: Due to their homeworld's orbit around a binary star, the temperature could vary from burning hot to deadly cold. Gradually, this species developed the ability to store the heat in their body, making them more able to survive the shifts in temperature and venture out from their subterranean tunnels even in the cold. However, it also served as a defense mechanism against the large predators that would stalk them. The sudden release of heat not only was repellent to the attacker, but alerted any nearby Psriikans to the danger, leaving a residual smell as a warning for a few hours before dissipating. They have two legs, two arms, and two dual-purpose appendages between them that can serve as either legs or arms, depending on the need, and a long, broad tail provides both stability for fast movement and a natural weapon.Physical Variations
Their skin and scales are jet black, with the exception of the males, who feature prominent highlights in various bright colors, used in attracting mates. Of the three main races, the largest difference is between [Race 2], which possesses eyelids, and the other races, which lack them. Additionally, there are minor variations in the males' highlight coloring. Different tribes also had different ritualistic tattooing practices, and some still carry these as a mark of pride in their ancestral people-groups. Racial intermixing is very common, and thus a myriad of different hybrid races exist, although they are usually categorized under one of the three major racial groups.Society and Culture
Societal Structure
In accordance with their everpresent focus on survival given their homeworld's harsh conditions, Psriikans formed a very strict hierarchical society based on the individual's contribution to society. The lowest class were the workers, then the warriors, the artisans, the military officers, and the priesthood who have since been replaced by the civil authorities, who are technically on the same level as the military officers, but often held in lower regard.Family Structure
In accordance with their strict hierarchical society, gender roles are clearly defined, with three added female-only social classes. Females may fill worker, artisan, and the priesthood/civil authority classes, but were historically excluded from both military classes. Instead, they had their own female-only social classes. Although in contemporary eras females are included in the military classes, they retain these unique social classes. The social classes are mutually-exclusive—a female who is part of the female-only social class cannot also be part of the military class. The first translates into Arbiter as "brood mother"—on equal social standing with artisans—and is for those who care for their young full-time (although they may also have a job). The significant majority of females who have mated fill this social class.
The second translates into Arbiter as "warrior mother"—on equal social standing with military officers—and is for brood mothers who have reared two or more warriors.
Psriikans in the Cluster
Given the hostile and rapidly-shifting nature of the homeworld's environment, many Psriikans eagerly emigrated to the colonies. Later on, as interastra-national travel became more accessible, many emigrated to other nations and so sizable pockets of Psriikan population can be found on several foreign worlds.Their reception varies by location, but they are typically well-received for their work ethic and physical strength. However, they are often shunned or even outright rejected by more xenophobic species or species with preexisting hostility towards reptilian species, and their oft-blunt demeanor does them no favors in many courts.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Endoskeletal quadruped, possessing two arms. Frontal set of legs are dual-purpose and can be used as secondary set of arms. All limbs end in a four-fingered hand, but only the forward two sets of limbs have opposable thumbs. The body terminates in a long, muscular tail that helps with balance and self-defense.
Genetics and Reproduction
Females lay clutches of three to five eggs no more frequently than once a year. They are very selective in when to lay eggs because of the dangerous temperature swings of their homeworld. While this is no longer necessary due to the prevalence of climate control, the instinct is still there and the choosiness takes a different form such as financial state or location.
Female Psriikans have the ability to tightly control their fertility cycles, with opening a cycle requiring the relaxation of certain muscles that are naturally contracted. There are numerous practices used to help this process along, with various forms of massage, stretches, and meditative physical exercises forming the basis of these rituals and methods. Sometimes a cycle fails to close properly, which can create serious medical problems. The solution, however, is usually simple and can be performed at home, requiring methods similar to those used to open a cycle. Periods of prolonged stress make it much harder to open a cycle and can even permanently damage a female's fertility. When suffering extreme stress or anxiety, the muscles contract more tightly, causing varying degrees of discomfort centered around the female's internal reproductive organs.
The female usually lays the eggs after no more than three months gestation, and then another four to five months pass before the eggs hatch.

Ecology and Habitats
Psriikan society began in the temperate region of Psriika, moving between the ground and the caves depending on the temperature and feeding on the small creatures that followed a similar life pattern, going aboveground in the warmth and retreating to earthly burrows when the temperature grew cold.
Due to the dangers posed by the world's shifting climate, they created expansive subterranean sanctuaries to which they returned for refuge when the outside temperatures grew too unbearable.
When aboveground, they spent all their time preparing for the next temperature shift, refilling reservoirs, restocking depleted animal pens, and growing what food they could before the temperature shifted and killed the crops.
They also, by necessity, became experts at creating aquaducts in order to manage water supplies from the underground streams and periodic polar rivers.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The Psriikans' diet consists largely of local game and a particularly hardy crop grown during the warmer seasons, but they are not choosy eaters and will usually eat anything necessary to their survival. Waste of food is heavily frowned upon in Psriikan society as an after-effect of food's scarcity and the many famines suffered due to untimely temperature shifts.
Anything from small rodents to the large, thick-hided, tusked herd animals provided a source of food, and many would be abducted to massive farming caverns where they would be bred for food.
The most stable staple of their diet, however, was a hardy tuber that could survive the more mild temperature shifts, should the warm months end early. These were grown plentifully and massive stores of them were stockpiled in carefully-constructed storerooms kept dark and cooled with carefully directed subterranean water.
However, these systems were not foolproof, and both primitive and advanced Psriikans alike suffered famines caused by improper storage or crops lost to temperature shifts, as there was rarely enough meat to make up the difference. Many wars were fought over food stores, with some of the more cynical suggesting such wars had the effect of reducing the number of mouths to feed, whether or not any food was won in the fighting.
With the much greater variety of foods available to them now as a result of colonization and interastra-national trade, such famines are a thing of the past and Psriikan society enjoys the bounty now granted them. Even so, food remains extremely important and the offer of a meal is still considered a great compliment.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
Their heads possess an arrowhead shape, tapering from their long neck to a blunt nose, and their head rolls up and over their cranium, which in males then tapers in a sharp ridge down to just behind the point of their muzzle. In females, the transition is much softer and flattens out earlier.
Their two eyes are positioned on opposite sides of their head in raised sockets that provide them a nearly panoramic view of their surroundings.
Their ears are nearly invisible, taking the form of small, dark holes just behind the jaw, but provide hearing on par with most sentient species.
Their mouth opening reaches from hinge to hinge, so even though it is not much different from the average sentient, it has the effect of appearing especially wide. They also possess a very long, broad tongue, which the lidless races use to clean their eyes.
Males feature colored highlights on their "eyebrows," down the head's ridge, and just under the jaw.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
The majority of the population was based in the temperate zone, a band which wrapped around the planet and maintained the most consistent distance from the suns. Little attempt was made to expand beyond this band, although there were nations scattered all along the band.
Because of their homeworld's harsh conditions, Psriikans were only too happy to emigrate to the colonies or even other star nations.
Only three billion Psriikans remain on Psriika, with several billion inhabiting each of the major colony worlds and many billions more scattered across the rest of the cluster wherever they are not shunned.
The Arbiters' estimates place the current clusteral Psriikan population at roughly 120 billion.
