The Looming
Divine Portfolio & Role
The Looming (The Sovereign of Suspension) is the omnipresent environmental deity of the Seven Woods. It is the literal wall of water that chases and shelters the fleet. To the party, it is not a quest-giver but the "Ticking Clock" of the campaign. It represents the consequences of failure. It is the physical manifestation of the boundary between safety and drowning, currently destabilized by the theft of the Dripcrown artifact.Manifestation (Appearance)
The Looming does not take humanoid form. It appears as a colossal, non-breaking tidal wave towering hundreds of feet behind the rearmost raft-city.Priesthood & Relations
The Dripcrown (The Tether): The primary relationship. The Looming gifted the artifact to this mortal lineage specifically to hold itself back. It views the Dripcrown as a jailer it loves.
The DripGuard: The Dripguard are the sworn protectors of the Dripcrown and the Seven Wood Afloat. They are part holy guard, part royal escort, part disaster response.
The Thief: The Looming is currently fixated on the location of the stolen Crown. Its currents are subtly trying to push the rafts toward the thief, regardless of safety.
Divine Will (Personality)
The Volatile Parent. The Looming possesses a personality defined by a terrifying duality: Cruelty and Forgiveness. It treats the populace like wayward children who must be frightened into obedience for their own survival. It is possessive and demanding, requiring constant emotional management. It does not want to destroy the Woods, but it is compelled by its nature to crush them if they do not prove their worth or if the tether (The Dripcrown) is severed.Signs & Portents (Voice)
The Looming has no mouth. It communicates through Atmospheric Pressure. The Hum: When pleased, the air smells sweet and salty; a low, comforting thrum vibrates through the hull of the rafts.
The Crack: When displeased, the air pressure drops suddenly, causing ears to pop and headaches to bloom. The wooden rafts groan under the stress.
The Spray: It "spits" at the city when irritated, sending arcs of freezing, crop-killing saltwater over the defensive barriers.
Divine Intervention & Threats
The Rising: Every day the Crown is missing, the water rises one foot higher.
The Gift of bounty: If the players perform acts of great bravery, The Looming may surge fish onto their decks (a reward).
The Saline Judgment: If the players hesitate or fail, the salt spray increases, threatening the food supply. The deity forces the plot forward by making "standing still" deadly.
