The Grand Duchy of Koszvolòi
The Grand Duchy of Koszvolòi
Koszvolòi is the official name of the area known colloquially to the Empire as the Mountain Duchies.
It is divided up into three parts, to wit: The Duchy of Hoszmèzovàsàr in the north; The Marches of Bànat in the centre; and the Duchy of Oradevàsàr in the south.
They are ruled by a Grand Duke whose traditional capital is Debrèsti, in eastern Bànat, though in practice the Grand Duke spends most of his time in Rhèvensfurth.
The duchies of Hoszmèzovàsàr and Oradevàsàr each have their own dukes, though these have been bannermen of the Grand Duke since time immemorial. In practice they are largely independent, though in times of conflict, the duchies come together under the Grand Duke’s banner: a raven or upon a field azure, surmounted by a crown argent and a Holy Sign or.
The shared language is a dialect of Old Vòhai, with a large number of Mòvadhi loan-words.
Koszvolòi has been a part of the Mòvadhi empire for almost 1800 years. The higher nobility is largely Mòvadhi, though the petty nobility, the patricians, and the landed gentry are still generally Vòhai-speaking.
To a large extent this power structure is accepted as reality, though the Vòhai-speaking population still regards the Mòvadhi nobility as interlopers, imposed by a distant Emperor.
The Grand Duke has two votes in the Imperial Electoral College, and the Magisters-Elector of Shègesvar and Debrèsti each have one.
The current Grand Duke is also the Warden of the Rhèvensthal, a hilly march located where the Rhèven passes from Bànat and the Earthbone Mountains into the Imperial Heartland.
