Mare River
The Mare River is located in the east of the Iola island, it's the largest river on the island and connects large parts of the centre of the island to the coast and the wider world by acting as a route for merchants coming up and down the river.
The river has its origin in the hills that make up the interior of the island, where the river originates from a small spring. The course of the river takes it in a mostly eastern direction. Along its route to the sea, the Mare River is joined by three smaller tributary rivers, increasing the volume of the water and marking the ending and or starting point from where large vessels can navigate the river. It's also here that the largest settlement of the Iola island is located. The lower part of the river is prone to flooding due to the low elevation of the land around it, the islanders partly solved this problem by either building their settlements at a distance from the river, with elevated walkways leading to the riveredge, but other places have build stonewalls of loose rocks that are then constructed along their stretch of the river, while these walls are not able to hold the water back when the river floods but
The islanders of the Iola island have been using the river and its tributaries for centuries as a source of power, and by the time of the Falco campaign the islanders were performing many different processes by using the power of the river, like milling corn and driving processes used in blacksmithing to a limited amount.
The river, even to this day, is renowned for its rich fishery, with some species of fish such as the Daria Iola reaching sizes of up to five metres and powerful enough to sink small fishing boats.

Nice little river article. I like their solutions to the flooding problem.
