Obscuring Shawl

Table of Contents
A piece of fabric that covers the attunement crystals on the shoulders of the Vinalur Werewolves.

Manufacturing process

The shawls are sewn from a dense piece of wool felt that serves to block the light of the attunement crystals. After embroidering the shawl with traditional patterns, the inside is lined with a smooth, woven fabric. This makes them more comfortable on the skin.   To keep the shawl in place, the overlapping fabric is typically pinned together by an ornamental brooch.

History

Traditional Coverings

Shoulder coverings were already common in the Werewolves' homeland. They were designed to be easily taken off when inside a heated building, so that the intense, rust-brown glow of their shoulder crystals would be visible to others of the community. Usually, those were made of thick fur to keep the wearer warm while they were outside.

Appeasing the Locals

When the first immigrants arrived on northern Vinalur, they adapted to the warmer climate by wearing lighter clothing and leaving the shoulders completely uncovered. However, they soon learned that the Elves believe the attunement crystals to be gifts from their Divine Parents. In their eyes, those signify their superiority over other creatures, so the Elves reacted very strongly to Werewolves showing off similar crystals.   After several incidents with the local population - ranging from verbal abuse to physical violence - the immigrants learned that covering their attunement crystals was the safer option. Therefore, they started wearing lighter fabric shawls over them, reminiscent of the traditional fur shawls. Those are only taken off when a Werewolf shifts to their bestial form, in which case the crystals disappear under their fur.
