The Kiln

Novaroman rec center for thrown glass competitions, the Kiln has several black box theaters where entrants can throw down. The place is a bit shabby, with stained and torn chairs in the lobby, an ancient drinks machine, and fogged CVs where the results of bouts are displayed, but there's a sense that this is intentional. Gastin Greene, a former thrown glass champion, owns and operates the Kiln, keeping his one good eye out for new talent.   Silica Kraft spends most of her time here.

Purpose / Function

Opened in 1997 to give street kids a safe place to throw down.

Architecture

The Kiln is a haphazardly-built collection of boxes with low ceilings and bare walls.

History

After retiring from the smithing circuit, Gastin Greene noticed an increased number of accidental deaths in Novaroma due to unsupervised glass smashing in alleys and abandoned buildings. He rented a storefront on the edge of town and turned it into an arena where anyone could come to throw down, offering competitions with prizes as incentives to bring the games in off the street. As the Kiln's reputation grew, he took over a neighboring building and expanded the business.   A few years in, word spread that the Kiln was a place to source fresh glassmithing talent, and people flocked there to be discovered. The Kiln became so popular, Greene opened a second location in 2000, and a third in 2004, all with the same 'shabby-chic' decor that made the original so appealing.
