Silica Kraft

Silica Kraft (a.k.a. Sil)

The daughter of silica miners, Sil Kraft developed a talent for blown glass at a young age and begged her glassmith uncle Al to train her. He took her on as an apprentice, despite her limited lung capacity (the result of a childhood infection), and taught her how to use glass blowing tricks on smaller scale. At the time of the novel, she's been refused entry to the Glassmith Union for the third time, on the grounds that she's 'merely a torchworker.'   Her mother was incapacitated in a mining accident several years prior to the start of the story, and her father is consumed with his work. She has no other family besides her cousin Jeremy, Al's son, who's a student at university. They behave more like siblings than cousins. When Al was arrested for kidnapping and murder, it came as a complete shock to Sil, but she immediately distanced herself from him, despite his many attempts to contact her.   Sil is impetuous and desperate to prove herself amongst the men she considers her peers. As glassmiths become obsolete, they close ranks, and she wants to be among them before they can shut the door.

History

Al took Sil on as an apprentice, despite her gender and limited lung capacity. He taught her to apply glassmith techniques to lampwork and, despite his intimidating teaching style, made sure Sil knew he was proud of her. Sil, for her part, thought of him as a father figure, and was devastated to discover he was a member of the Void who had taken part in the kidnap and murder of several vitrices. Once he was arrested, she cut all ties though he continues to attempt to make contact via letter.
