The Scouring of Rozan

Political event

Intercal 4-13, Year 1

The Scouring of Rozan, henceforth referred to as The Scouring, was a 9 day period during which the city of Rozan was purged of Secessionist influences through the use of the infamous Proscription Rolls. Over 500 prominent Dwarven and Dragonborn families were massacred by Loyalist forces, their lands seized, their estates turned over to Loyalist families as reward, their names forever stricken from the records.

Facing political pressure from the powerful Serranian House, as well as domestic pressure from the Plebeian and Patrician population of the city of Rozan, Dictator Acerbo was forced in to a decision regarding the fate of the remaining Lesser Race families within the walls of Rozan. Sensibly, many had already fled in advance of the rebellion and those who did not were swift to openly declare their loyalty to the Republic. Attempting to play for time, the esteemed Dictator demanded of these families a special taxation to buttress their words of loyalty with much needed capital to supply the ongoing effort to raise new legions. A near unanimous response was received from the wealthy Lesser Race families, with gold, arms, cloth and other valuable goods flooding the senate house by nightfall; the famous historian and senatorial Annex Minerva Julii Ennebus likened the tide of tribute to a legion of coin, flanked by silken cavalry and protected by walls of honest steel.   Such was the overwhelming response from the Lesser Race remnants that many were quick to withdraw their accusations of disloyalty, due in part to the generosity and political influence that these families yet possessed. Nevertheless, it was a doomed gesture, for during an inspection of these goods performed as a gesture of friendship by the esteemed Dictator, he was assailed by a vicious assassin and would have been slain by this skilled bladesmith had it not been for the quick reactions and decisive protection that his lifelong friend, the esteemed general Mallea Tempus Felix offered. Many onlookers were slain in the onslaught of blade and spell, but at the end of the whirlwind of death, Mallea Tempus Felix stood victorious but wounded and the esteemed Dictator held not a scratch upon his most holy person.   Whether it was outrage at discovering the race of the assassin, political machinations or a combination of the two, blame was quickly shifted to the Lesser Race remnants within the city. Condemned by the Tiefling heritage of this assassin, a mob formed quickly to seek out the Tiefling families of the city and destroy them before they could escape. Those tieflings present were quickly slain and, in a bid to restore order, the esteemed Dictator deployed the Paladins of Dwindal and a promise to investigate the traitors within their midst. His words seemed to have a calming effect, though violent reprisals did occur into the evening.   By morning of the next day, Proscription Lists had been drawn up by the esteemed Dictator, his chosen commander Mallea Tempus Felix and the Proscriptions (for the uninitiated reader, Proscription refers to the revocation of citizenship protections and offers a portion of the estate of the Proscribed individual's estate as reward to their killer) were carried out by the Oppean College; an infamous criminal organisation with close ties to the senatorial elite. Knifemen darkened many doors and bloodied the tiles of many an atrium over the next 9 days, with not a single prominent Lesser Race family remaining within the city.   Some believe this to be a necessary measure taken by the esteemed Dictator in a no-win scenario, others yet whispered of unseen strings being manipulated by the powerful Serranian house, so as to drive a wedge between alleged peace negotiations with the possibility of reintegration. Whatever motivated these actions, the results and the profits were evident.
