Karenet

Race

A human variant species distinguished by two small horns made of cartilage arching from their mid-frontal cranium. These horns, called the gish, are sensitive to electrical disturbances. The karenet are believed to have evolved among the Old Stars, though records of that time are scant.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Mountaintop Homes: it is said, back in the Old Stars, the karenet were driven out of the lowlands of the world due to a failed terraforming device. The long history and evolution pressures give the karenet a preference to high altitudes.   Storytellers: Oral traditions aren't unheard of across Markait, but the most traditional of karenet cultures have a tradition of deep-throated recitation of storytelling paired with emanations of their electrical fields to add additional depth to the performance. It is not quite musical, but does have a rhythm one might mistake for it.   Storm Festival: All karenet enjoy participating in the Storm Festival, it is one thing that brings them together despite all the differences that come between their populations across the stars. All karenet will attempt to make a pilgrimage to a suitable mountaintop somewhere. These mountains usually have unique weather patterns that allow for electrical storms that usually become part of the festivities.

History

The history is muddled, having various events that have erased many of their electrical records since coming from the Old Stars. What was preserved was mostly saved by the oral traditions that seems to have saved so much from the Humbling. Most of their oral traditions insist that they were from the Old Stars, and that they originally evolved under harsh conditions from humans (or perhaps whatever came BEFORE humans if some radical sects are correct). Their claim is that they evolved on a planet they were attempting to terraform. The terraforming attempts failed, and the reasons vary. Sometimes the oral traditions say the terraforming device suffered from poor maintenance. Some other traditions say that some divine or unholy force forced sabotaged the devices. What is agreed is that the populations were forced into mountain tops due to all lowlands being poisoned by various volcanic gases sturred up by the process.
