Azarion Vessenor

Overview

Azarion Vessenor was an ancient and visionary arcanist whose mastery of both arcane theory and naval engineering permanently reshaped maritime civilization on the oceanic world of Maris. Living thousands of years ago during the height of magical naval warfare, he foresaw the catastrophic potential of unrestrained magic at sea. In response, he invented the Tideward system, an arcane barrier powered by a device later known as the Tideheart Crystal.

Today, his name carries both reverence and myth, and countless maritime nations claim lineage to his teachings.

Tideheart Crystal

Wondrous Item

Uncommon

Tideward Barrier:

  • When activated, the Tideheart Crystal projects a magical barrier around the ship.
  • The barrier blocks or nullifies incoming spells, effects, or magical projectiles originating from outside the barrier.
  • Spells cast from within the barrier function normally unless otherwise ruled by the GM.

Activation:

  • Must be operated by a trained Arcanist.
  • Activation requires concentration.
  • If the operator loses focus, is incapacitated, or chooses to end the effect, the barrier immediately collapses.

Power Scaling:
The strength of the Tideward barrier depends on two factors:

  1. Tideheart Upgrade Tier
  2. Arcanist Power (rank of the highest spellslot)

Higher-tier crystals and powerful Arcanists can block even extremely potent spells.

The Tideheart Crystal is an ancient arcanotechnical device created millennia ago by the legendary mage-shipwright Azarion Vessenor. Mounted visibly on the deck of a ship, the crystal channels the vast tidal energies of the world Maris, a planet covered by roughly 90% ocean. When properly operated, it generates a protective field known as Tideward, a shimmering arcane barrier that blocks hostile magic from outside the ship.

Tideward was originally developed as a defensive measure against devastating magical warfare at sea. Throughout history, it has remained essential to naval fleets, explorers, and merchant vessels alike.
