Southern Myths - Pallina

The Mother

The Pallina believe that the Mother brought nighttime to the world so that they could live as the Pallina do not like the sun. Before the Mother, it was always day. Then the Mother gave some of the Pallina intelligence so that they could grow and thrive. But not all of them as some of the Pallina did not thank the Mother properly for giving them the dark. The Mother then guided the intelligent Pallina from Kaveto Mountain to the forests and mountains where there were lots of wildlife for them to hunt and lots of places for them to hide from the larger species.   The Pallina in the Settentrionale Mountains believe that the Mother showed them to the northern mountains then stopped and let them find their own way from there. The Pallina that live down south left Mother when they left the northern mountains.   However, the Pallina in the Meridionale Mountains believe that the Mother showed them all the way through the mountains and that the Pallina in the north stopped following the Mother as they had lost their way.   Either way, what happened to the Mother is unknown and there are many versions of the story that tell where she went to next. Some say she kept going south across the Ocean. Others that she turned away from the sun, or even towards it to fight it off to keep the darkness. Others even say that she continues to live among them to this day.   Many expressions are common among the Pallina that call out to the Mother to help guide them, for example, "Mother guide me through this night" on a difficult night. Less common expressions are ones that use the Mother to scare children into obeying their own mother. Additionally, the Mother is also a title used by many tribes to recognize the leader of the tribe.  

Carlo, the Vagabando

The Wanderer is a Pallina myth, often invoked by wandering adult male Pallina to use as a guiding light or when they need to slip away from a dangerous or uncomfortable situation. Wandering male Pallina often believe that Carlo will find them in their time of greatest need, and help them through their travels.   Carlo is believed to be the Mother's mate who helped create all Pallina but then left the Mother over disagreements about the darkness. The Mother wanted everything to be dark at all times while Carlo believed that there needed to be some light to allow plants and other species to survive. Most stories tell of him wandering the mountains of Malplenan.  

Harbingers of Mother

The harbingers of mother are two female Pallina who show up and prepare for Mother's arrival. If peaceful, they ensure that the location is suitable for Mother's presence. If the visit is not peaceful, they prepare for Mother's safety. Many tribes today will send two female Pallina ahead to inform of Mother's coming.
