Cambions
Type: Infernal
Cambions are half-demons, either by birth or by horrific curse. In either case, they have a mortal body that is warped by Infernal corruption. While cambions are sometimes loyal to the demon who created them, they are often quite independent. Despite their sinister origins, some cambions rank among the most zealous warriors against the schemes of the Infernal sphere.
- Abilities: Like the demons that spawned them, cambions tend to have powers with a vicious edge. Abilities that maim, corrupt, and are otherwise particularly sadistic are the norm. They may alternatively have powers more geared towards corrupting the minds of others. Many cambions dislike using the full extent of their abilities, as their mortal half finds them difficult to stomach. Unlike true demons, cambions have souls and can die, though if they pursue their fiendish heritage they may be able to eventually transform into full demons — losing what remains of their humanity in the process. Many cambions are able to suppress the physical manifestation of their condition when they are not using their powers, allowing them to pass as mortal.
- Origin: There are two main types of cambions. The first is created when a demon mates with a mortal, creating a hybrid offspring. The second is created as a result of a demonic affliction, when large amounts of Infernal power are grafted onto a mortal, transforming them in the process.
- Varieties: Physically, cambions tend to look like mortals with a few demonic alterations, such as horns and a tail. The specifics vary quite a bit depending on their origin and the nature of their demonic progenitor. Hybrids born of a demonic parent tend to have straightforwardly mixed appearances. Cambions created by fusing a mortal with demonic power will usually either have no physical alterations, or more chaotic ones, such as a single deformed arm.
- Personality: The malevolence of the Infernal gnaws at the minds of cambions, pushing them towards lives of evil. Some embrace this, becoming just as wicked as full demons. Others fight against it, living virtuous lives in defiance of their demonic instincts.
- Visibility: Secret. The general public doesn’t believe in demons, so they don’t believe in cambions either. But unlike demons, cambions usually must live among the mortal populace. Some blend in by claiming to be mutants.
