Anomalies
Type: Astral
Anomalies are individuals and objects exposed to raw Astral energy, yielding chaotic and often logic-defying results. Despite often appearing mundane, they are some of the strangest and most unpredictable types of metahumans.
- Abilities: Anomalies easily have the most varied abilities of any type of metahuman. Their powers are often surreal and operate by very specific rules. An example might be someone who can only be seen within mirrors, a bag of rice that never empties, or a dog whose ear contains a portal to another dimension. Tied to the Astral — the power of mind and ideas — these abilities usually operate entirely on concepts, with little regard for material logic like the laws of physics.
- Origin: Anomalies are usually mundane people or objects who are suddenly, apparently spontaneously, empowered. Due to the chaotic nature of anomalies, no one is entirely certain how they come to be. They’re clearly connected to Astral, however: large amounts of Astral energy have been detected in places where anomalies were created. Jaunts into the Astral Chaos are one of the more common ways anomalies are formed.
- Varieties: While anomalies can take nearly any shape, one thing they have in common is that they tend to be derived from fairly mundane things. One thing to note is that, while virtually anything can become an anomaly, when you’re making an anomaly PC you should pick something that either is or has acquired sentience.
- Personality: The personality of an anomaly usually doesn’t change much after their transformation, which can result in them seeming surprisingly normal. In some cases, anomalies are stuck in permanent denial of their altered state; they’ll act as though they are unaware of their changes despite any evidence shown to them, and will quickly forget or excuse away any proof they experience. Others begin displaying uncharacteristic compulsions, particularly about using their powers.
- Visibility: Secret. Some anomalies with more plausible abilities are incorrectly classified as mutants. The rest are either locked away or voluntarily hidden.
