The Fall

Backstory

In the beginning, when the world of Luxratha was still very young, it was overseen by many opposing forces. Life and Death, War and Silence are but a handful of many. Many are without proper names, and their duties are not well known, but they each had an opposite that they would work against in various ways; this opposite pulling helped to keep equilibrium a constant for the mortal creatures below. The most well known spirits were the celestials and demons, who kept the balance between good and evil.

The Fall

Celestials and Demons were more violent in their methods to work against each other. They would physically fight endlessly in their efforts to banish their foe to the far reaches of the skies. It is their nature to be opposites yet alike in their desire to eliminate what opposes their morality. This constant fighting eventually caught the attention of the other forces of the universe; causing great displeasure as their quarrel even began to spiral out of even their control. This threatened the balances the other forces were charged with. When the conflict became too much to overlook, the other spirits, in a decisive move, cast the legions of demons and celestials down to the planet below. They fell like stars, and became trapped in mortal flesh with the foe they grappled.

Aftermath

The result were the mortal races, each holding within them nearly limitless potential for good or evil. They also had a unique trait, separate from their component spirits: the ability to choose their own path, as opposed to the single-minded compulsion that pushed the demons and celestials to war against each other. When a mortal dies, the two spirits are released to rejoin their eternal war in the stars, but left either weakened or strengthened by their time in mortal skin, depending on the ultimate morality of the person. These spirits may be persuaded to serve special spell casters in the realm of mortals once again, in hopes of guiding the summoner toward their own side of the conflict. In this way, they secure stronger allies in the future, when the mortal spellcaster eventually dies. There have been awe inspiring and tragic cases of one spirit being so corrupted by the host that they emerge fundamentally changed, or even fused with their opposite, resulting in particularly powerful Celestial and Demon Lords.

Context

This is a creation story of the various Harinae tribes across the Midnight Expanse. Their culture of revering spirits respects both the good and evil forces that exist in the world, in many forms. They call forth celestial spirits to guard against the demonic spirits that prowl the nights. The Tieresi people have their own thoughts of the creation of the world’s various peoples.
