Harinae Tribes

Appearance

The result of horrific mutations inflicted upon them by the Great Empire, the people of the Harinae have never regained their former appearances. It is unknown what sort of people they once were, but now there is little to show a common overarching thread of likeness in their appearance. All of them have additional limbs and skin textures that give the look of a patchwork doll. Scales, chitinous exoskeletons, claws of reptiles, mammals or crustaceans; features of rodents or even insects. Much like the demonic hordes, no two are alike in their mutations, and offspring can look wildly different from their parents.
What parts appear to still be human have a dark skin complexion and honed solid muscles from their nomadic lifestyle. A great many possess red eyes from their practice of summoning creatures to protect against the demonic hordes and other predators.

Naming Traditions

Given Names

Given names in the Harinae tribes always begin with a consonant, as a long standing tradition to separate themselves from the Great Empire. Feminine names are typically bi-syllable, with a break between, while masculine names have this break near the beginning of their name, typically after the first letter.

Tribe Names

In the Harinae tribes, the surname is always the name of the individual’s birth tribe, and is spoken first in introductions. This helps to communicate swiftly not only where a person is from, but also their general bloodline if they wish for a child with a particular member of another tribe.
Example: Maril Dal’eah, a female summoner from the Maril tribe.

Culture

Common Dress code

Due to the vast variety in body structure among the tribes, clothing is very casual. Typically, full wardrobes are made of scarves that are wrapped around the body, rather than pulled over it. They favor neutral colors with mottled patterns, to better blend into the background if viewed from a distance. Their armor is made of strips of stiff reeds and woven grasses, or the occasional bars of metals.

Common Taboos

  • Kill another Harinaen. Even for severe crimes, offenders are banished.
  • Kill without making use of the whole body, as a show of respect for the taken life.
  • Couple with a member of your birth tribe, to prevent inbreeding as much as possible.

Ideals

Relationship Ideals

Members of the Harinae tribes do not formally marry, instead the woman will travel to other tribes and seek out a partner willing to have a child with them. She can select as many suitors as she desires, though the man has equal say in whether he wants to procreate. Afterwards, the woman will stay with the tribe to raise the child. All the men she had coupled with are considered to be the father.
Couples may favor each other and have multiple children together, but these cases are uncommon. When they do happen, typically both parties will have some token of affection that their partner hand-crafted for them.

Lost History

Show spoiler
In an era long forgotten by the living, the bloodlines that would one day make up the Harinae people were slaves to the Great Empire. Less than slaves really, as they were seen as unfit for typical laborers, for one reason or another, and instead given to spellcasters and scientists to be guinea pigs for their experiments. Many of the empire’s “miracles” were paid for by the blood of these slaves.
When the empire was destroyed, it left these mutated peoples without a home and without a purpose. Many had never known freedom, so the sensation was alien, and it was a struggle to survive on their own wits and abilities. Many had mutations too severe to survive long, but their shared suffering inclined the rest to care for them as long as possible. This kinship that transcended blood ties held through the generations, forming the basis of their culture.
