Nobility Wards
Culture
Within the Midnight Expanse, death can come as quickly as a snuffed fire. Knights and guards, men and women alike, regularly lay down their lives in defense of those who had less training to defend themselves. These deaths often do lead to children being left without parents to care for them.
To ease the concern in the parents, and to honor their loss should they fall, the nobility of the cities are bound by duty to look after orphans within their cities. A noble family can care for as many wards as they can support, and if they in turn fall to the demonic hordes, then the wards are moved to another. It is naturally an unpleasant process for the children, having just lost their families or caregivers, and having to get used to a new home and potentially new rules. However, this is to ensure none of them ever go hungry or have to sleep without shelter.
Wards are also assigned a cleric of War to speak to, with the priest attempting to aid them through the trauma and help the scars to be less painful and damaging.

Education
Wards are given the education befitting the noble family they live with, each taught to read and write, as well as being sent to aid craft masters in their work when not studying.
Craftmasters can volunteer to educate the wards in their craft, receiving their aid in return for the instruction. The masters can also watch their developing skills to see if any have a particular talent for their work. These wards have a good chance of becoming officially apprenticed, ensuring they have a paying profession for the future. Others can take more time to develop talents, but enthusiasm can make up the balance. Wards who take a particular liking to a craft can request more assignments there, to gain more experience so that they can apply for a job in the field later.
Wards are expected to learn as much as they can, so that they can make their own way once they receive their second decade band.
