Cursed Child

Summary

In the haunted, cursed halls of the city of Luxinae, a cry was barely muffled. A dark elf woman writhed in her birthing pains, looking up at the night skies through the obsidian glass roof. It was a darker night than usual, the moon was dark and the second moon War was too far away to shine its light upon the world; even the stars were few and far between as storm clouds were beginning to herald the coming rains.
The woman held in her cries, but not out of fear of the demons in the darkness. Her blood red eyes showed her mastery of blood magics that could bind them. Perhaps those that lurked at the edges of the room were her puppets already.
No, she did not fear them. She simply refused to be made to express her pain. She would not let the world hear her cry out.
She laboured for hours in the dark, until finally she held a half elven little girl. Her skin was as dark as the night outside, flecked with silver speckles. She had inherited the silver eartips of her mother, but the fiery orange hair of her human father. The girl’s eyes were already the ominous red of evil magics.
On the hour of her birth, every demon for miles let out a roar, their corrupted language singing dark praises. The matriarch’s heir had come.

Cultural Reception

The myth of Zahra Verlice’s birth is questionable to anyone who has known her, but unfortunately it had become popular and widespread after a demon lord had emerged from her family home in the midst of the city of Sol-Ingris, and her parents vanished.
Many were lost in the ensuing battle, and it was discovered afterwards that a ritual had killed many more in order to summon the demon in the first place. Despite Zahra being only a child at the time, and having been horribly injured as well, her red eye made the common people assume she had been responsible.
The uncanny air of danger that lingered around her, and her generally shy demeanor, did not help matters either. Fortunately she was taken in as a noble's ward, as her father had been a respected paladin, so that she was not left to starve on the streets after the incident.
