The Covenant Of The Platinum Dragon
"The Silver Sun Falls, The Empire's Rise And On the Last day, the Dragon-King Flies." - Creed of The Platinum DragonAmong the oldest and most revered covenants in Lusamiel is the Covenant Of The Platinum Dragon, also called the Dragonguard of Bahamut. The Dragonguard have spent millennia shepherding the dragons by the will of their king, Bahamut, and going to war with the mortal followers of Tiamat on several occasions.
Divine Origins
According to the records of the Temple of Bahamut, the Dragonguard was first formed after the schism between dragons due to Tiamat's betrayal. The Mother and Father of dragons when to war and their children took sides, those that chose Bahamut established a formal military to fight off Tiamat's ever-growing legion of dark followers. At first the Dragonguard was exclusive to dragons, but over time it was shown that the valor and bravery of lesser races was enough to award them places in the order.
Since then the Dragonguard has functioned in two branches, the Dragon Corps and the Temple Corps. The Dragon Corps is made up of Bahamut's hand picked champions, non-dragons included, while the Temple Corps has its base of operations in the great Temple of Bahamut on Mount Anrath and oversees the comparatively mundane tasks of the covenant.
Tenets of Faith
The Covenant of The Platinum Dragon commands its followers to root out evil wherever it lies, and puts special emphasis on the misdeeds of dragons and Tiamat's fiendish Abishai. The Covenant is fairly forgiving to most transgressions, but to commit evil in the name of Bahamut is an unforgivable offense, and will be met with immediate expulsion from the order.
The covenant will bring in any people who seek them, even those who once served an evil covenant so long as they have left that in the past. However, they are still kept under close scrutiny by the leadership of the Dragonguard and they will be slow to advance through the ranks due to this. Despite this, the covenant does its best to prevent all forms of discrimination within the order, however dragons, in particular Aether Dragons, are shown preferential treatment.
Priesthood
The starting rank within the Dragonguard is that of First Acolyte, followed by Second and Third. It is at Third Acolyte that the position of the initiate within either the Temple or Dragon Corps is decided. Within the Dragon Corps after Third Acolyte is, in ascending order, Dragon Knight, Sky Knight, Knight-Captain, and Knight-Commander at the top. In the Temple Corps are the Priest, Archpriest, Dragon Cleric, and finally the Platinum Cleric as an equal to the Knight-Commander. Together they dictate the will of Bahamut to the masses and the entire Dragonguard.
Granted Divine Powers
The Dragonguard are known to posses a platinum aura when they are favored by Bahamut, when deployed this aura wards off chaos but emits light so it is not a very stealthy ability. The more favored they are the more abilities they may posses, the next power known to manifest is to surround their weapon in radiant energy that can cleanse fiendish creatures, and finally the most highly favored can sometimes emit a platinum breath weapon that is anathema to creatures of evil.
Political Influence & Intrigue
In Mount Anrath, The Dragonguard has equal sway in politics as the Senate itself among the people of Santiel and is sometimes more widely beloved for its actions. The Covenant of The Platinum Dragon is adored by the common folk but is looked on with suspicion by those outside of Santiel, due to their close relation to the nation. Most assume a member of the covenant is a spy for the republic.
Sects
The Covenant of the Platinum Dragon is the near universal focus of all who worship and/or revere Bahamut, but some cults may bear his name though they rarely posses his favor if they are outside the Dragonguard.
