Hrefna, in speaking to him, learned that Rada, their hostess in the village, had a nephew who not only knew the Kapkan' Marshes well, but was also the subject of a prophecy whereby he was fated to bear witness to a Rada of various unclean beings in the marshes. He struck a deal with her to convince the nephew - Velko - to guide them to the Rada in exchange for a hefy sum in case he does not return. Her companions later made their own side deal with Velko, which upset Naum, but they promised to pay him the difference upon their return.
