The Smoke Between Sisters

A dark wizard, cloaked perpetually in thick black smoke, had once kidnapped two Elves; Maeglinn and Faerah. The two sisters were brought to a cave and forced into an enchanted cauldron, one that seemed deceptively small from the outside but vast within. The Wizard had been impossible to truly see—his features always obscured, his presence more like a shadow than a man. But the voice, was something that Maeglinn would never forget and identify in an instant.   Time passed in strange ways inside that prison, and the sisters had tried everything they could to escape. Eventually, against the odds, they did. But when they emerged, something had changed. Faerah, already beautiful, now seemed touched by an otherworldly charm. Maeglinn, on the other hand, had discovered something far more volatile: lightning surged in her blood, powers that had never existed before. She had always believed these transformations had not been the wizard’s intent—some mistake in whatever dark scheme he had envisioned.   But rage had taken hold of her before she could make sense of it all. Without even understanding what she was capable of, the magic inside her exploded. The cave collapsed. And in the chaos, Maeglinn lost sight of her sister.   Maeglinn has been searching for her sister ever since. She looked through every cave she could find until she got captured by the Skavens and has joined a group called The Order of Adamant. At that point in time, Maeglinn had already been searching for her sister for a year.   The Order of Adamant presented her with new possibilities. They had a lot of connections and were planning to go to Illumé. During their preparation to go there, she commissioned a small portrait of her sister with a local artist in Thalaniel. The portrait matched the likeness of her sister perfectly. Even though Maeglinn did not expect to have any luck finding Faerah in Illumé, she still had good hope that this will help her greatly in her search.

Many adventures later, Mae finally finds her sister somewhere she had never expected her to be. At the Wild Party in Illumé, Maeglinn receives intel that her sister is engaged to Illian Quoronriel, the most corrupted nobleman of the city. Frantically, Maeglinn sprints through the villa and pulls open every door until the other of her group finds her sister Faerah in a room with Illian. She immediately attacks him. They fight for a while until Faerah shouts at Maeglinn that she doesn't know her. She denies ever having seen her, let alone being her sister. Faerah remembers nothing of her life before coming to Illumé, but says she came to the city of her own accord. Not even the portrait could convince her, nor Illian. This, and Illian's smug demeanor enrages Maeglinn so much that she attacks him again, now using her lightning powers. Gotrick and Leo, her two most entrusted companions, grapple her and drag her away from the party. Once outside the mansion Gotrick orders Serosh to sit on top of her until she stops struggling. When Maeglinn calms down enough, the Order returns to the mansion.   Maeglinn has explained to the group about what happened when she and her sister were captured. The Order has begun to speculate a few things. Faerah may have lost her memory caused by the collapse of the cave. They also speculated that Faerah not only had become even more beautiful, but maybe she gained powers like Maeglinn as well. House Quoronriel's entire legacy revolved around magic and arcane matters. If anyone were to recognize unique gifts in Faerah, it would be them and they might use her for it.   Once at the Aezaezias Academ, Maeglinn delved into the history of the House—its lineage, its ambitions, anything that might explain Illian’s motivations. Sadly, she could not find anything about the Quoronriel family taking a dark turn.   Meliana Quoronriel was Maeglinn's other option. She is Illian's sister and she might be able to find out more. Maeglinn, was very hostile with her at first, something Meliana did not appreciate. She apologized and because Meliana understood Maeglinn's pain, she is going to ask Illian how they had met and go from there.   After a few days, Meliana had come back with more information which turned everyone's narrative about Faerah. Illian and Faerah had met in the Celestial Archive of the Aezaezias Academy. He had been looking for a specific book—one that Faerah was already reading. She made a deal: he could have the book, but only if he asked her on a date. The date had gone so well that Illian became completely smitten and forgot about the book entirely. How long Fae had already been in the city remained a mystery—and a potential lead to investigate. Meliana also noted that Illian had changed since meeting Fae. He had grown increasingly obsessed, doing anything for her and pushing others—including his own father—away. This sparked a new line of thought among the group. Had it been the other way around? Had Faerah charmed him? She did seem very intentional about her actions.   Meanwhile, Cole had also been on a mission to investigate Faerah. She clearly wore the pants in the relationship. She used charm—and more than occasionally her body—to sway Illian’s every decision. Maeglinn asked if there was any sign of magic, but Cole hadn’t seen anything of the sort. She spent her days reading in their private quarters, appearing sweet and doting only to Illian, while being short-tempered and even rude to the staff. Illian, it seemed, was preparing a special gift for Faerah—and had visited a location in the Luminary Veil, suspiciously close to the entrance of the Dawn Ward. That raised red flags for the entire group. Most unsettling of all: on the sixth day, Faerah had begun keeping her curtains shut. As if she knew someone was watching. Cole, known for his ability to disappear into shadow, found this unnerving. No one ever noticed him. Until now.   The next step was to investige this building Illian so frequently visited and on the day of Aegaelion's big distraction, they got their chance. After a brief fight with some Warforged that guarded the place, they followed an underground tunnel that opened up into a big decaying room. There, they faced none other than Faerah herself.
