Tahëmana

When the respected kühterei of Anëhtoma needed a tie breaker, they called for the sages. When the sages required such, there was no one on the outside they could ask for wisdom, for the offering of wisdom was their purpose and specialty. Their solution, then, was to vote for one among them, whose voice would count for two when such a voice was required.

Requirements

There were few true requirements for one to become a Tahëmana, or participate in the vote to choose one. Mainly, one had to be an adult and a salwën—the guide and healer of a clan, who took it as their purpose to know the world and keep the balance between man and nature, so neither could overtake the other.

All sages and their older apprentices were welcome in the gathering, and all who fulfilled the requirements could vote on a tahëmana, or be chosen as one for the duration of the gathering, which usually lasted around five days—the same length as the entire midsummer gathering as well as the Anëhtoma.

Duties

Originally, the only purpose and job of a tahëmana was to break any ties the Sages' Council might find themselves in by having a stronger vote than the rest. As the years rolled by, they also became something of a spokesperson who appeared in front of the Anëhtoma's kühterei when they themselves needed a sage's opinion, as well as one to mediate between the other sages when necessary.

Beyond those moments, when one voice was required to reach above the rest, the tahëmana had little duties or responsibilities, particularly as their term was only a week-long endeavor.
