Kühteri of Anëhtoma

In the beginning of the Second Age, when the Merientei were yet to fully adjust their life to their new life in Ullonwï, they established a yearly meeting where anyone and everyone could voice their concerns and offer solutions. Within this meeting, the Anëhtoma, representatives chosen from each clan held a voice to decide, and a responsibility to listen.

Career

Qualifications

All adults could be chosen to be a representative, but often the individual already held some amount of trust and respect among their own clan, as well as outside of it. Outside of each clan's personal opinions and rules, there was no real common ground as to what was to be required of an individual for them to become accepted.

The rest of the representatives could, however, refuse to accept someone they deemed unfitting for the position. To do so required considerable support from the other members and was never done lightly, knowing the clan in question could take offense, which could harm Anëhtoma's inner workings once their new chosen representative claimed their place the next year.

Perception

Purpose

The gathering changed its form many times throughout history, and so did the titles within the representatives and their qualifications change as well. At the heart, however, remained its original purpose purpose: to air out disagreements without bloodshed, or at least bloodshed in a controlled, safer environment, and to decide on rules and rulings which would affect all clans within the area.

Social Status

To be chosen as a clan's representative was a sign of trust and respect. They became something of an authority figure, equal to other representatives but held to a higher standard than the average merienti. Beyond that, there was little reward outside of the power and influence the position granted.
