Emerald Guard
The Emerald Guard is responsible for both the domestic police and military of the Kingdom of Karatan and answers directly to the King. The actual passing of judgement is handled by a different branch of government, but the Guard investigates crimes and prosecutes the suspects. Batallions are stationed along the borders and would be called upon in the event of war.
Structure
Local placements of Emerald Guards are commanded by a Captain. In larger cities, there might be Lieutenants that handle smaller units. Within large groups, such as during wartime, Seargents might handle a few groups of Guards, with each group commanded by a Corporal.
Captains answer to Colonels who oversee whole sections of the Guard, often with a focus on a specific kind of force, such as the navy or the cavalry. These Colonels report to the General of the Emerald Guard who in turn follows the commands of the King.
Public Agenda
The Verillian Empire to the west is always a risk that the General considers in all matters. It is the only risk taken even more seriously than dealing with domestic issues. This means that the Guard has a stricter and stricter attitude the further west one gets in the Kingdom. They are also more heavily armed and more prone to force obedience there as well as in the larger cities.
Depending on where one is, the Emerald Guard might seem oppressive and ruthless or dismissive to the point of being ineffective.
History
The Emerald Guard was the reformed military from the conquest that formed the Kingdom of Karatan in 330 BSR. Their loyalty has never been questioned, though a few high-ranking members have been executed for treason as they tried to gather enough military power to overthrow the king. But, for the most part, the Guard is good at policing their own.
How strict the Guard is has varied a lot through the years, both depending on its general and on the King they answer to. There have been times where religious freedom has been all but nullified and speech was carefully monitored. The current leadership is quite relaxed when it comes to cultural mores and much more focused on crimes that might destabilise society. Actions, not attitudes matters. Open worship of Asmodeus is to be ignored, but even minor theft is dealt with harshly.
