Nuran

Nuran is the grass-like plant growing in the grasslands of Suganuran. It is one of the most important resources for the Zonuri people.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Nuran has a beige coloured sheath and blade, and if left to grow it blooms yellow flowers.

Genetics and Reproduction

It takes about four months (150 days) for the Nuran to grow before it starts reproducing. As soon as the yellow flower at the top of the sheath starts to grow, the Nuran starts to develop seeds. The seeds form in the ground attached to the Nuran roots and when they are ready to be fertilized the seeds are absorbed by the sheath and transported inside it with the liquid in the veins until it reaches the flower. This takes about two days. The flower produces a separate liquid that fertilizes the seeds. Then the Nuran relies on the bird Rara Zobabopi, which use the colourful seeds in their own mating rituals, to spread the seeds. The seeds are worn by the birds and fall of during the ritual. Then the seed will take root as long as the soil is not too wet or too dry. A single Nuran produces several rounds of seeds and they spread very quickly.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Nuran is one of the main sources of food for the Zonuri people. They make flour out of the roots that they then use to make walde, a sort of dark brown bread.
The blades of the Nuran are very strong, so it is dried and then used to weave a fabric called Detubi basta. The fabric is then used for many different things; clothing, baskets and other containers, tents, for writing on and many other things.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Nuran only grows in the temperate grassland that one can only really find in Suganuran.
It grows to some extent in neighboring countries as well, but it is still a resource that is mostly contained to Suganuran
