Reis Toga

Among the high Ogres of Lorgaire, the simple but elegant Reis Toga is the favored garment when not in battle. It consists of layers of cloth in contrasting colors, with subtle meanings for the shades chosen and severity of their polarity. Although in structure it resembles the standard toga worn by most ogres daily, the fine materials and sharp contrast of a Reis Toga are meant to command attention.   Composed of the finest cloth available and displaying vibrant colors is a demonstration of wealth and power for the high ogres. The large hands and tough hides of an ogre are ill suited to the craft of fine thread and sleek cloth, making many of the fabrics favored for Reis Toga imported from other lands, or magically refined. Similarly the dyes used are often imported, collected from rare wild sources, or magically imprinted upon the fibers. With such an investment of resources only the high ogres could afford to regularly wear cloth suited for Reis Toga. Even among the high ogres most castes cannot afford more than a small number of bolts, which may be paired to make just a few combinations suitable for regular use. Considering these factors it takes a great deal of material to enrobe a 12 foot tall one ton soldier as a prefect would be expected to do for his personal guards.   In the course of their official duties most high ogres would be expected to be garbed in Reis Toga, if other garments were not better suited to the function, such as armor. At home, engaged in recreational activities, or for informal social occasions coarser and less costly bolts of fabric would comprise their toga. The bold and contrasting colors of Reis Toga serve the same function as many venomous creatures and poisonous plants, they are a threat. The wearer demands the attention of those in their presence, and failure to treat them with due respect will result in harsh punishment. Thus it is rare to see low ogres allowed to wear Reis Toga by their superiors.   Many humans derogatorily refer to the togas worn by high ogres as a 'dress' and similar garments are most often worn by women, with some of the same attention commanding implied by the style. While the patterned fabrics of some dwarven garments evoke similar attention getting properties, they are more egalitarian in their use. Among elves some ceremonial robes resemble Reis Toga, but do not see regular use in favor of more practical wear with subtle coloration.
