Aberella
Aberella is the capital city of Mercercle, though not the largest.
It is where the Council of Six meets and one of the major ports in Mercercle.
Once upon the time this was where the kings of Mercercle would sit, but the line has since died out and the castle is now used by the Council as their meeting grounds.
The city gates prominently feature the distinctive emblems of the major and minor houses of Mercercle. The LaSaphir crest, a ship with billowing sails, dominates the port district, while the Norric emblem, a stylized tree with silver leaves, marks the city's central trading district. The Saulerue house emblem, a small boat, can be seen flying from the river docks, while the Starling house emblem, a bird with outstretched wings, stands out prominently atop the largest temple in the city.
Once where the throne of the king of Mercercle sat, this area is now where the affluent and influential members of the Ducercle residents make their home. It is high up on the coastline, protected on one side by the coastal cliffs that make attack impossible, and protected by the basalt walls that encircle the district. It is sometimes called the Great Black Spot by those who resent the upper crust. Maelstrom
The port of the city is known as Maelstrom - the name was chosen to appease Shalimyr, but it is not inaccurate. The hustle and bustle of Maelstrom is overwhelming to those who have never visited Aberella before. Everyone knows their roles and moves without question to accomplish it. There is no room for error on the docks. Benalillo's Break
Pronounced "Ben-al-EE-yo," Benalillo's Break is the name of a small island off the coast of Aberella that houses the city prison, so named for the harsh shoreline where the waves threaten to dash an escapee on the rocks. The name also extends to the military district on the mainland, directly west of the island. But where great quantities of men gather with naught but idle hands and no one to put them to use, illegalities spread like a virus. Most businesses in this district have some sort of under-the-table operation going on. Everything from brothels, smuggling, and fight pits are held on a don't ask, don't tell approach. Some of the higher up members of the Platine Garrison even are the proprietors of these businesses.
Bright and bustling, the Rhyodir Courtyard signifies the best of Aberella. It is a lively conglomeration of the cultures and races that have flocked to Mercercle to make a better life for themselves, away from the stuffiness of the arcane Cystilians, the hollowness of the grim Vespmarans, the religiosity of the Adurans, the wildness of the Dawnstruck Wilds, or the unpredictability of the Northland gnomes. Commerce is the name of the game, but there are a few temples that are nestled in between the buildings, or into the first floor of a boarding house.
