Incurable Wealth

When the wealth reaches the brain, there is no going back.

It is evidence of the incredible barbarity of modern wealth that it is not recorded with trust or with coin but a number inked on paper for it would be too much work to count it piece by piece.
— Honovan Kestilst, Thoughts on the Growing Disparity of Wealth

A Disease of Modern Times

When income disparity began to increase in Burim, it was first viewed as motivation for those who weren't at the top, that is still said but never seriously. As the inequality increased, the rich were able to solidify their positions and prevent competition from rising up in their industries.   Now, wealth is viewed - by the poor and working people - as a disease, one that changes people and leads them down a path of immorality. The rich maintain a facade of empathy by funding organizations like the People's Kitchen but their disdain for those they see as below them is impossible to hide.

Symptoms

Incredible wealth is a condition that afflicts the mind and people suffering from it are characterized by a lack of empathy, a belief that the law applies only to other people, and an insatiable lust for more wealth. For this disease there is no known cure as the afflicted have more wealth than they could ever spend in a lifetime - if they could even bring themselves to do so.   While it is not a contagious condition, it is one that can be inherited, dooming entire lineages to it devious clutches. Incurable wealth is, in fact, the least contagious disease ever recorded being almost the opposite; instead of spreading itself to others, it takes from them to give to itself.

Beyond Burim

While Burim is the nation most commonly associated with the incredibly rich, it is not the only nation that faces the issue. In Bral the emperor is born into a level of wealth that could never be achieved by any citizen.   The question most people ask is why one of these nations has resulted in the formation of the True Citizens and one is seeing prosperity all through its borders. Decades ago the acting emperor, Enkhtuya Dodai, began the long-term project dubbed the Imperial Infrastructure Initiative. This monumental effort expanded services of all types across the nation and guaranteed jobs to all.
There is no cure for wealth but there is one solution.
