Backdrops

Locations

Línasha Island is a patchwork of places that press against the senses.

The Forest

Cool, damp air heavy with the smell of dirt, wet bark, and crushed leaves. Light filters down in broken shards, turning dust and pollen into drifting motes. Underfoot, twigs snap and old leaves sigh with every step. Unseen beasts call like low throaty cries, chittering, and the rustle of leaves in the shadows. The air tastes faintly metallic as especially when zíno stirs.

The Ancient Tree

A single, towering presence deeper its bark ridged and scarred with old marks. It smells of resin, old storms, and something faintly sweet, like sap drying in the sun. There’s a subtle vibration is a slow thrum that could be the pulse of zíno. The air around it is still, muffled, as if sound has to push harder to be heard.

The Burg’s Gateway

Weathered wood and stone, stained by sea wind and years of hands passing over it. The hinges creak and groan, a familiar complaint. Kin’s clatter and chatter are within inside of the walls. The softer more uncertain beasts or mystical sounds of the wilds. The air smells of cooking smoke with the people behind with various goods. Crossing under it always feels like stepping across an invisible line.

Saye’s Shop

Close, warm air wraps around anyone who steps into the curio shop. Heavy with the scents of dried herbs, bitter roots, sharp resins, and old paper. Shelves crowd the walls being crammed with jars, vials, feather bundles, and odd little relics. The twisted bones and carved stones turn slowly on strings overhead. Jars clink when the door opens as powders grit under the fingertips on the counter. A soft chorus of rustling paper, grinding mortar, and faintly chiming charms. The sounds follow each subtle pulse of zíno slipping through the room.

The Bathhouse

Steam curls out from under the door, carrying the scent of hot water, soap, and minerals. Inside, every sound echoes: splashing, low voices, the drip of water from stone basins. Warm, humid air wraps around the skin, loosening muscles and blurring sharp thoughts. The world outside feels far away, muted by the steady hush of water. Sometimes the steam shimmers oddly, as if zíno is sliding through it in lazy waves.

The Inn

A low, steady murmur of voices, clink of cups, and the scrape of chairs over worn floorboards. The air smells of smoke, spilled drink, roasted food, and wool cloaks that have seen too much weather. Lanternlight paints everything in warm gold and deep shadow. Laughter spikes, then falls back into the hum. Tastes linger on the tongue like sweet, salt, spice, and sour. A traveler’s tale carries a sharp edge of distant places and dangerous zíno.

The Garden

A small, tended patch were soil smells rich and alive. The crushed leaves release quick, teal scents. Púens buzzing lazily as thin stems brush ankles as you pass. Sunlight feels closer for its warmer on the skin and the air tastes of damp dirt. When zíno is strong the colors seem just a little brighter with edges a little too sharp.

The Burrow & Glade (Hints)

The burrow mouths are dark and close-smelling dirt, fur, and the sharp tang of zíno. Every sound is softened to be swallowed by packed dirt. In contrast, a glade is open sky and filtered sun, the grass whispering underfoot. The air there can feel oddly charged, like the breath before a storm, carrying a quiet, tingling buzz of zíno against the skin.

Each location in Línasha should be felt, not just seen: the scrape of stone. The sting of an herb’s scent, the distant cry of a beast, or the vibrations hints zíno is always nearby.
