Talents & Training
Training
You gain experience by overcoming challenges, defeating creatures, and completing adventures.
Experience is used to improve your attributes and acquire new abilities.
Improving attributes and acquiring new abilities require downtime.
DESIGN NOTE: 20,000 XP is the equivalent to a 20th level character in Pathfinder. Consider 1 level in PF1e equal to 1,000 XP worth of improvements and abilities, and assign XP costs to new features appropriate to this scale.
Retraining
You can retrain using downtime activities.
Talents
Talents are a catch-all type of character options that expand certain abilities or add new ones. Talents are divided into four ranks, with standard being the lowest and legendary being the highest.
- Standard talents (100 XP) add small numerical bonuses based on circumstances or provide a singular benefit. Generally do not have any prerequisites.
- Expert talents (200 XP) add large numerical bonuses or new abilities usable in specific circumstances. Generally have prerequisites.
- Master talents (300 XP) are class abilities, monster abilities. Will have prerequisites.
- Legendary talents (400 XP) are class abilities and monster abilities with scaling effects.
Unless otherwise stated, you can take a talent only once.
DESIGN NOTES: Do not create talents that only replicate the effect of a cultivation. If you create a talent that replicates a cultivation and also adds new effects, increase its rank accordingly by comparing the XP costs of the cultivation and the different talent ranks.
Talent Packages
Talent packages are collections of talents that share the same theme, are dependent on each other, or interact with each other.
Base Talents support the base attributes and abilities of any character.
Lineage Talents improve your current or awaken dormant lineage traits.
Deadly Dastard focuses on sneak attacks.
Empty Hand focuses on unarmed combat.
Guardian Path focuses on talents to help protect your allies.
Guiding Light focuses on talents to lead others.
