King's Wood

The King's Wood is a forest south of the city of Angeleor, the capital of Eleonis. It was named the King's Wood when House Angeleos held the crown of Eleonis for the first time and has since been called that by the inhabitants of Angeleor even when House Angeleos was not in power. By now, it is known by that name all throughout Eleonis and beyond.

It may have a remarkable name, but the King's Wood is a mostly unremarkable forest. It mostly consists of broad-leafed trees and is home to common wildlife such as deer, wolfs, bears, rabbits and many kinds of birds. In this sense, it is just like any other forest found in the lowlands of Eleonis and most of Leanor.

Still, the King's Wood has one unique feature, though it is a man-made one. Many large and smaller roads and paths criss-cross through this forest. These all have unique names and are marked with letters or symbols reflecting the name that are painted on trees near crossroads and make the paths easy to identify and follow. One does not even need to know any of the names of the paths in order to find one's way here.

This peculiarity makes the otherwise completely regular forest a touristic attraction of Angeleor and the surrounding area. Some of the names simply reflect the direction or destination of the roads while others are connected to local myths and lore. Either way, trying to guess the meaning of the symbols and abbreviations can be a quite enjoyable pastime for visitors and locals alike.

The King's Wood also contains the Grove of the Dead, which functions as a graveyard for the city of Angeleor. It has been the resting place of the members of House Angeleos for many generations.

The burial rites in the Faith of the Four Elements, the predominant religion in Eleonis, require the planting of a tree on the site of the burial. Therefore, any eleonian graveyard becomes a grove of trees.

The trees symbolize the return of the departed to the elements. If a young tree on a grave grows well, it is considered a good omen for their remaining family going forward.
