There were many who said after the release of SEVEN director Kurosawa and his team could not possibly come up with something to top what many believed was a seminal work in the arena of virtual drama. This was further enhanced when writer Dante Watanabe elected to go on a several year sabbatical. So one of the trio of geniuses was out of action, many felt that other hungrier companies would strive to reach the top with brilliant efforts.
Studio VULCAN felt it had the chops to overtake the success of SEVEN. It's virtual drama; Black Market Blues tells the story of a struggling gang member during the era of the First Syndicate War aka Cafeteria Carnage and into the First Dry War. It is a heart rending story filled with all the right elements. But while it was cock of the walk on its initial release it didn't last past that. It's crew and cast were all relative unknowns.
Film and story were good and the actors did their job well, but they did not grab the imagination as SEVEN had. So Black Market Blues fell by the wayside, though it would become a cult classic among the bikers and gangsters. Jimi Vissarion made a name for himself as Yuji, the offsider of the would be boss of bosses Don Calderone.
A year later "To KIll A Wizard" exploded, literally, onto the market. This time Luna Delgado played the leading role, Valentino Rossetti was her offsider and Ryu Tachibana, the former lead in SEVEN, played the villain. Rafael Ozero claimed that the story was based upon the interpretation of an actual ancient Lazarene fairy tale thus making this the first work based upon native sources.
In essence a monarch is worried about the activities of a wizard in his realm, he had once relied upon the wizard but now he felt that this worthy was working against his best interests. So to resolve the issue he tells his grand vizier (played by Valention Rossetti) to contract someone to deal with the problem. The grand vizier thus approaches "Moonlight", a legendary assassin and sword wielder.
"Moonlight" played by Luna Delgado in her first protagonist role, accepts the task on certain provisos. The grand vizier agrees to these terms, Moonlight in turn accepts his word and the contract is sealed. Off to the Mountain of Sorrows Moonlight goes with a few comrades ready to take on the Wizard and his monstrous minions.
To Kill A Wizard (TKAW) is a straight out action flick, though this time around Luna Delgado is able to demonstrate her martial arts chops. And she does so convincingly while at the same time exuding charm & sexiness that will appeal to a broad audience. "Moonlight" is no pushover and when this production is wrapped and released it will become the role so many of her fans know her by, even though it is not as successful as SEVEN.
Yet in spite of not reaching the heights achieved by SEVEN it is a major hit, far in excess of Black Market Blues and other efforts. On the tenth anniversary of the release of TKAW, Ms Delgaod made sure to turn up to the celebrations in full character costume. Strangely so did her co actors, Rossetti and Tachibana which was a first.
