Super TL;DR
The session began the morning of the fifteenth day on the island. Walt put together an exploration party to find a way off of the island. They found the wreck of the Percent and some interesting items in its hold. After talking with a family of boars, they learned that two interlopers held a village of Kenku hostage in the interior. The search party traversed the jungles to free the poor Kenku post haste. Along the way, Lottie ran off and met a woman who told Lottie to come and visit her on the northwestern coast of the island.
When they came to the village, Rattigan enlisted the help of two massive creatures the interlopers seemed to use as muscle while Mauler created a bomb-arrow and stealthily moved into a position near the two interlopers who were completely unaware of the search party’s presence. Mauler’s bomb arrow killed the first one while the creatures Rattigan enlisted bit and killed the other.
The search party then freed all of the remaining Kenku. The Party spoke with the village elder who told them the island was actually from Irragaia not Kurra. Abeni used Speak with the Dead to interrogate the heavily armored interloper. It turned out they were trapped there from another world and were sacrificing Kenku to a ritual spell which would get them home. The village elder took the party to their temple where they found a lantern object with advanced arcane properties which caused Abeni to see the past when they attuned with it.
The Party then went to find Lottie’s friend. It turned out to be Amelia Earhart who crash landed on the island many years ago. She invited them into her little hut Percy unexpectedly reunited with Barthor. The session ended just as Amelia said they all had to catch up and poured everyone shots of whisky.
The session began two weeks after the Block E of the Fringe and all of its residents crash-landed on a seemingly deserted tropical island to the southwest of the Great Continent of Kurra. Abeni prevented the group from starving via their Create Food and Water spell but everyone was anxious to find better food and explore the island in more detail. So on the morning of the fifteenth day Abeni, Lan, Lannary, Lottie, Mauler, Percy, Rattigan and Walt formed an exploration party to at least walk the coast to the northeast and see if they could find what they were looking for.
They found the wreck of the Percent, a 100 year old schooner which ran aground on the island. Inside, the search party found the remains of about a dozen people and some interesting items.
Near the schooner Rattigan and Mauler talked with a family of boars. The boars mentioned that two ‘interlopers’ took over a village of Kenku located in the interior of the island. As it involved Kenku, it was a masive affront to Mauler and a high priority for her to free them. She mobilized her friends and after a preliminarily scouting mission by Clip and Jenny the Cat, the search party made for the Kenku village.
On their way, Lottie ran off and met a Human woman whom Lottie thought was named Kitty Hawk who was from the Realm of Thought. The woman told Lottie to come and visit her on the northwestern coast of the island. Lottie returned to her friends and told them of the encounter and said they had to take her up on the offer.
Before they engaged the interlopers, the Party set about laying plans for the ensuing battle. Rattigan crept along the edge of the village where he found a caged elephant creature guarded by a Human-sized viper. Rattigan charmed both creatures and enlisted them in the attack. Mauler stealthily made her way into an advanced position and readied an improvised bomb arrow to get things started. Abeni also crept through the village to set one of the dilapidated structures on fire but instead found six Kenku children chained together as hostages. Instead of lighting the building aflame, they freed the children and escorted them to safety.
Mauler kicked off the attack with her bomb arrow which killed the more heavily armored of the two women. Rattigan’s creature-friends took care of the other woman who seemed to be casting a spell over an alter in the center of the village.
With the two threatening women killed, the Party freed the Kenku who profusely thanked them. The Party spoke with one of the village elders for a time. It turned out that the island was from the world of Irragaia and they were trapped there. When the Party asked how long they had been in Kurra, the elder expressed that time seemed to work in odd ways especially in the waters around this island.
To get more information, Abeni cast Speak with the Dead on the more heavily armored of the interlopers. She admitted that they were from another world as well and that the ritual they sacrificed the Kenku towards was to get them back to their home. They claimed that the domain goddess of their world traveled with them and would help them return. They also said that their longships which brought them through the expanses of space were still somewhere on the island. When the spell ended, the Party left the viper to eat the corpse of the woman.
The Kenku elder showed the Party the village shrine. Inside they found a lantern covered in runes which emanated an interesting light. Abeni examined it and when they touched it were mentally transported to a meeting of the Heroes of Old as they faced a dilemma related to the lantern. After observing them for a few moments Abeni’s mind returned to her own time as they found the powerful magical lantern had attuned to them. After some more conversation, the Party left the Kenku village to find Kitty Hawk’s homestead.
The Party arrived at the homestead just as night fell. The woman introduced herself as Amelia Earhart, a pilot from the Realm of Thought who crash-landed on the island some time ago. She invited them all inside where Percy’s colleague Barthor happened to be asleep. The two reunited as Amelia poured everyone whiskey which is where the session ended for the night.
Detailed Notes
Int/Ext. Block E (formerly of the Fringe), along the coast, a tropical island, somewhere in The Outer Sea off of the southwestern edge of the Great Continent, Prime Material, Kurra - About Two Weeks After Last Session
The session began fifteen days after the former Block E crash-landed on a tropical island off of the western edge of the Great Continent of Kurra. They were able to survive from some bland if not plentiful rations (mostly rice, black beans, green plantains which they fried in oil, coconut, yuca which they made into a sort of flatbread and fresh water) which Abeni created via their Create Food and Water spell. Persephone tried to contact Thuline but she remained mute to Percy’s questions; she only came to her in vague dreams. After fourteen days, survivors were anxious to find some better food and to explore beyond the immediate area. Only Clip had gone beyond the line of sight of the Fringe and found indirect signs that other people had been on the island but nothing concrete. On the morning of the fifteenth day, Walt went around to all of his former charges to see if they were interested in exploring the island. Everyone except Maddie, Ginger and Trenk said they would be interested. Maddie did ask them to look for medicinal plants which Abeni said they would definitely do. She also said to keep Lottie away from the poison ivy which they previously had fun wrapping around Lannery’s legs to “boost her immunity to it.” Before they left, Abeni consulted their divination cards about the success of the journey and they pointed to ‘a fresh start or leap of faith, synchronicity (inverted) and something astute.’ Abeni took this as a sign that something would happen that would be a fresh start for the crew but that would not inspire synchronicity or that would require one splitting off from the others and astute observation. With all signs looking good, the exploration party started to walk along the beach. As they did, Percy asked Walt if he believed he was actually a clone of Grayson. Walt said that he didn’t trust anything Marguyle said as he was likely trying to get in his head. Abeni walked a little away from the main group with their feet in the surf as they looked happily out toward the horizon.Int/Ext. Wreck of the Percent, along the coast, a tropical island - Continuous
After coming around a bend in the shoreline, the search party saw a wrecked schooner in the distance. From afar the schooner looked like it had been there for at least twenty years and was in a state of advanced decay. As they approached, they noticed a family of boars living near the wreckage. Rattigan took the initiative, stealthily approached the den and found two female boars and three babies in their den. He used his first level Wild Insight to speak with them. One of the two adults was about to charge Rattigan but he cast Calm Emotions on her. He convinced her that neither he nor his friends were there to harm her or her children. So they told Rattigan that they would allow his friends to pass without trouble as long as they stayed away from their den. Abeni walked up to the bowsprit and examined the ship’s figurehead. The beautiful mermaid and brass name-plack indicated that the ship was named The Percent. They could tell from being around boats for most of their life that the ship itself was around 100 years old. They remembered hearing about a ship of that name that went missing around 26 years ago. They also found a half-buried mettal box near the bow. Inside the box was an aquamarine hand that had some unknown magical properties to it. Percy went into the broken hull of the ship to look around. She found a bunch of ruined books, a pouch with 150 gold pieces and a sealed scroll case which contained one scroll of Flight. Mauler also poked around the hull of the ship until they found a locked cabin. She was easily able to pick the lock and get inside. She found a skeleton wearing a prestine-looking robe. She took the robe off of the corpse and put it on and immediately felt a little smarter. It turned out that the robe increased her intelligence score by one point. Well away from the ruined ship, Lottie built a sandcastle. In the multitude of shells and sand she found an absolutely beautiful looking black star sapphire. She immediately pocketed it and added it to her list of shells and stones for safe keeping. Rattigan clambered into the more remote areas of the ship. He came to a skeleton of a dog who died in the wreck but around his neck Rattigan notice an absolutely prestine collar, not touched by signs of decay. He placed the collar in his rucksack and continued on into the hold. He found what seemed like the captain’s cabin whose door was broken and allowed him easy entry. Inside he found a beautiful peacock feather and gold quill. When he picked it up, he was instantly able to write in beautiful flowing Elvish script and could compose whatever he wanted in that language. Elsewhere in the ship, other Walt found a metal chest and Lannary found a set of very sharp glass daggers. Walt tried to pick the chest’s lock but couldn’t manipulate the tumblers to get it to open. He lugged the chest to the side of the ship where the group initially went their separate ways. Over the next few minutes, the group came back together and showed off what they had found. Lan was able to cast Mending on the waterlogged scrolls Percy found; they turned out to be a grocery list or part of the manafest dated to 26 years ago. As the loot was mostly boring, Mauler and Jenny the Cat split off from the rest of the group to talk with the boars. One of the two adult boars had a long scar down her face and one clouded eye from a previous encounter with a Humanoid. That one called herself Estelle and said that some people killed her mate which is why she had been living with Bex (the other adult boar) ever since. Mauler said she and her friends were going to go after the people who did this to them and asked where they were. Estelle said that they live in a village in the interior of the island. Bex added that she should be careful because there were many more of them than her friends. She also added that they had several birds with black feathers captive which was a serious affront to Mauler and fueled her with rage. Mauler returned to the group and informed her friends that they were not alone. She also told them of her desire to attack the group holding the hostages as soon as possible. They came up with a plan to send Jenny and Clip to scout ahead as they would not likely be noticed and so the group would know what they were getting into. Clip flitted off into the nearby jungle as Jenny ran along the ground behind her. The group waited about twenty minutes for their friends to return. In the intervening time, Walt continued to struggle to pick the chest’s lock. Lotte came over and picked it on her first attempt. The lid lifted back to reveal a cloud of mold and decayed food. It was someone’s lunchbox from 26 years ago with a whole forgotten meal inside. Lottie claimed it as the new home for her rock and shell collection. Elsewhere, Abeni scouted around for useful plants. With their knowledge of tropical environments they quickly found a vanilla tree and several aloe vera bushes. After saying a prayer to the spirits of the plants, they harvested several dozen vanilla pods and maybe twelve aloe stalks. They could have harvested far more but did only enough to allow their respective plants to keep thriving. No more than a few moments later, Clip and Jenny returned from the copse of trees on the inland side of the island. Clip described two people in heavy metalic armor with dozens of Kenku tied up in what looked to be a village. Jenny said that the village smelled of the Kenku but not of the two, leading her to believe that they were newer to the island. There was also a very large elephantine looking being in a cage guarded by a fearsome Human-sized viper. Clip added that in the village there was also a weird alter the two set up and were in the process of casting a ritual spell after the sacrifice of what looked like one of the Kenku. The group mulled over the information and the best way to deal with the two intruders. They brought up and nixed the idea of setting traps as it would take too long. Abeni wanted to try a favorite tactic of getting them to chase a decoy into an ambush but that was also nixed. The group settled on a more direct plan of sneaking into the village, freeing as many Kenku as possible to help in the fight and then surprising the two intruders from the jungle with overwhelming force. So the group set off in the direction of the inland jungle to attack the two interlopers and to free the Kenku.Ext. A jungle area between the Percent and the Kenku village, inland, a tropical island - Continuous
Most of the group stealthily walked along a narrow game trail through the jungle. Most, except for Lottie who found a piece of clear quartz sticking up from the ground. She dashed away from the group in pursuit of the pretty stone. When she reached it she heard the sounds of a creature running away from her. Lottie gave chase until she caught up to the source of the sound. Rattigan took off running a safe distance behind to ensure that she didn’t get into trouble as Abeni slinked off to the side of the group in anticipation that this would bring about an ambush. After sprinting for a few moments, Lottie caught up to the source of the sound and pounced on the creature. It turned out to be a Human woman in her late 30s or early 40s with fair skin and blonde hair wearing a cloak. After clarifying that Lottie was one ‘one of the newcomers’ it seemed like the woman trusted her and tossed Lottie an opal from her bag. The woman said that she was from Kitty Hawk. which Lottie had no idea where it was; Lottie asked if the woman knew about Boston and the woman said of course she did. The woman said that the island was a bit like Alcatraz in her world, a beautiful island that was now her prison. The woman wished Lottie good luck in dealing with the ‘newcomers’ and said that she should come by her shack on the other side of the island when Lottie was done. The woman then walked off into the jungle and left Lottie by herself. Lottie returned to her friends who waited for her along the jungle path (all except Abeni who waited a safe 30 yards off to the left in case of ambush.) Once reunited, the group continued onward through the jungle. Rattigan could hear the chatter of monkeys in the distance talking about the strangers as they walked past.Ext. The Kenku village, inland, a tropical island - Continuous
Eventually the group came upon a small lake and the outskirts of the village that Clip and Jenny described. The buildings all seemed ruined with doors off of their hinges and windows shattered. Even from afar the group saw about 30 or 40 Kenku in chains sitting in the center of the village. Along the edge of the village, Mauler noticed several Kenku chained together but out of sight from the main group. Mauler cast Message to silently communicate with one of the Kenku that they are there to rescue them from captivity. The Kenku asked if she was one of the Raven Queen’s reapers but Mauler said it was a bit more complicated than that but none the less she was there to look after the Kenku. The Kenku told Mauler that their captors were performing a ritual to punch a hole in The Funnel so that they could return to their world. The Kenku said that they had sacrificed five Kenku had not worked yet and seemed doubtful that it would work this time. The Kenku said that they would have put up more of a fight against the sacrifices but the two outsiders held their village elder and several of the children of the village hostage. They wished that they had resisted more when the two came to the village but they were too cautious. Mauler returned to her friends and said that the Kenku needed to be freed and the spell needed to be stopped as soon as possible. The group crept closer to the main camp as they readied their next move. They saw a Human woman brandishing a scythe and another woman wielding a pair of swords who seemed to be standing guard. They could not see the elephantine beast or the serpent that the Kenku described. As his friends made their way to the buildings directly in front of the two interlopers, Rattigan took off on his own around the outskirts of the village to find the elephantine beast and the serpent. He skirted all of the buildings and avoided the notice of even the Kenku as he progressed almost half of the length of the village before he came to a large cage nestled in the jungle near the outskirts of the village. Guarding the cage was a massive viper basking in the sun although it was facing away from Rattigan. Rattigan was able to charm the elephantine creature in the cage. He convinced the creature that they were old friends. Furthermore, he convinced the creature that the two women tricked him and trapped him there against his will. The creature said that if he got out the viper would bite and kill him but Rattigan insisted he would take care of the viper. Rattigan freed the creature and told him to wait in the nearby jungle for his signal to attack which the creature agreed to do. With his new ally waiting but unable to attack, Rattigan crept closer to the village in the hope of finding the afore-mentioned viper. He came across it basking in the sun as it paid no attention to the stealthy Rattigan. When it finally noticed the approaching Human, Rattigan had already readied Charm Person and cast it as soon as the viper’s eyes met his. The creature was immediately enthralled by Rattigan and enthusiastically agreed to do whatever Rattigan suggested. Meanwhile, Abeni stealthily made their way away from their friends and toward what looked like an abandoned wooden building. They were about to cast Sacred Flame to light the building’s nearly collapsed thatched roof but first saw several Kenku children inside the building. Abeni scrapped their initial idea and freed the Kenku children instead. They had to pick up one of the Kenku children who was very sickly and weak and carry them to safety in the jungle several yards away from the house. As Abeni rescued the Kenku children, Mauler crept ahead of her friends using the dilapidated buildings of the village as cover. They got into a great position to take a shot at the woman in the heavy metal armor who seemed to protect the other woman as she cast the ritual. Mauler used her remaining black powder to craft an improvised explosive device which she attached to one of her arrows. Mauler completely surprised the woman in the armor with the bomb arrow. It hit her for non-lethal damage which surprised her but it was rapidly followed by the explosion of the black powder. The woman jolted backward and cracked her skull against the stone alter; the combination of the explosion and blow were fatal. Percy rushed forward in the chaos caused by the explosion and cast Firebolt at one of the floating runes which the woman casting the ritual seemed to make. The gout of fire struck true which destroyed the rune and closed the small portal which appeared to be slowly opening as a result of the ritual. The woman casting the spell jolted back as her commrade fell before her and her portal suddenly closed. She turned to face Percy (as the last major actor against her) and readied a spell. As she turned, she neglected to see the viper slither toward her. It bit her leg multiple times and injected a lethal amount of toxic venom. The woman cursed the adventurers as the neurotoxic venom rapidly took hold and she expired. The viper then set about swallowing the woman clothes, armor and all. With the two women dead, all of the runes phased out and the threat against the village ended. The Party set about freeing all of the Kenku from captivity; seeing that the danger was over Abeni brought the Kenku children back to the village square to reunite with their families. An older Kenku woman who seemed to be one of the village elders approached the now reunited group of heroes. She said that she didn’t know the exact spell they were trying to cast but she was sure that it would produce a bad outcome if they had been successful. She thanked the group for their liberation of the Kenku and ending the threat posed by the two women. Through the subsequent conversation, the Kenku elder mentioned that this island was originally located in Irragaia.. She said that after a large strom they awoke to a completely different world and that all the stars in the sky had changed. Mauler asked if the woman knew anything about Boom or Barthor. She said that she didn’t know a Kenku known as Boom. She definitely knew of Barthor the Red as one of the Heroes Adjacent who saved Irragaia from Akarathuline and Deceram. When Abeni delivered the sickly Kenku child to the elder, she thanked both Abeni and Ekundayo for their deed. Abeni was intrigued as not many creatures in Kurra could recognize the twinned souls. They spoke for a while about the Raven Queen and the dead of this world. It surprised Abeni to hear that the Kenku elder believed the Raven Queen was present in this world, just that no one could hear her. Percy inquired about how long the island had been in Kurra to which the Elder responded that was a complicated question beyond even her full comprehension. For the Kenku, the call to raise warriors to fight the Eldarin were called twelve years ago; to Percy that was only seven months ago. The Elder said the island arrived on Kurra about eight months ago just by the passing of days and nights but that time could be very different even from other parts of Kurra. She commented that they sent two people to the mainland of Kurra; after what seemed like a few weeks they returned much older and with families as if many decades passed. The group thought it would be a good idea if they could interrogate one of the dead interlopers so Abeni cast Speak With Dead on the woman in heavy armor that was currently being consumed by the viper. Through the interrogation the group learned that the two women were from another world which they called the Scar and was ruled by someone called Vi. They said that they were trying to cast a spell. which would allow them to escape the plane but it wasn’t successful before they were ambushed and killed. They also claimed that their domain goddess traversed the planes and was there with them.. They said their domain goddess does not exist in one domain but extends to all domains where her people are present and that gives them power. She said that her domain goddess was Skarradaramakka whose name the group of adventurers had never heard before. Abeni asked if there were more of their people and what their plans were for this world; the woman answered that of course there were more of their people coming on longships just like hers. Their plan was to dominate this world. As that was the last question, the woman’s spirit began to fade. As it did, Mauler commented that the woman’s hair looked hideous when she died; the woman’s final words were a horrified “what?!” as her spirit passed to the afterlife.Int. The Kenku’s temple, the Kenku village - Continuous
The Kenku elder beaconed the group to follow them into the village temple. Inside they looked upon an old lantern coverend in runes which emitted an etherial glow. She said it was an old artifact which had been with them on the island going back to Irragaia.Abeni stepped up to investigate the lantern.Ext. A grassy field, somewhere on the Great Continent, Prime Material, Kurra - Long ago
Abeni could not discern its origins or powers but when they touched it they were mentally transported to another time. They saw five people standing around that exact lantern discussing some dillema. Abeni slowly realized that one of the five was Grayson (from many years ago) which likely meant they were the Heroes of Old. The lantern was one of seventeen artifacts and if the Heroes didn’t collect them all, something awful would befall Kurra. It seemed that they were hung up on whether or not they should commit illegal acts to collect all of the items and if the ends justified the means. Grayson was the most resistant to harming innocent people in order to get the required artifacts but they all agreed that they would do whatever it took for the benefit of the greater good.Int. The Kenku’s temple, the Kenku village - Present day
Abeni then snapped back to the present day as the lantern attuned to their presence. It turned out to be a sort of ancestral weapon which gave Abeni some special abilities. Another, even older Kenku visited the group inside the small temple. He said his name was Barnabas. He said that they had not found the longships that the woman mentioned but they were likely on the far side of the island, likely along the coast. The group of former inmates said that they would leave the elephant creature and snake in the town for the time being but they were going to check on the woman Lottie met in the jungle whose hut was not too far away. The Kenku knew of the woman and pointed them in the direction of her homestead. They wished the group best of luck but also said the two women were the most dangerous thing on the island and they would likely get to the settlement without any trouble. So the Party wished the Kenku well and set off to the northwest.Ext. Jungles between the Kenku village and the Realm of Thought Woman’s homestead, interior, a tropical island - Continuous
The group made their way easily enough along a path through the jungle between the Kenku village and the Realm of Thought woman’s hut. The woman’s camp turned out to be on the other end of the island. It was nearly sundown before the group reached the cleaning which denoted the little homestead.Ext. The Realm of Thought woman’s homestead, northwestern coast, a tropical island - continuous (about evening blue hour/nightfall)
The group found the little house constructed of local timbers, palmfrons and thatch without much difficulty. They heard music of an unknown genre and source coming from inside.. As they approached, the woman that Lottie knew as Kitty Hawk realized she had visitors and came out from her cabin in an evening robe. Kitty Hawk invited them to rest for a spell. The woman realized she hadn’t actually asked Lottie her name and proceeded to do so; when the woman reciprocated, she said most pople called her Millie but her legal name was Amelia, Amelia Earhart.. Amelia said that her and her co-pilot Fred crash-landed on this island several months ago. Fred was badly wounded in the landing and passed away shortly after. She buried him nearby then built the little establishment that they saw. She said she had been on the island for the last fifteen years since. Rattigan fixated on the fact that Amelia said plane. He thought that she meant a plain like a wood plainar as he was fascinated by woodworking. So Amelia took them to see her plane (a twin-engine Electra) whose technology fascinated everyone except for Rattigan who was thoroughly disappointed that it didn’t have to do with woodcarving. The group said that they knew someone from the Realm of Thought, Maddie, and that she was from the 1990s. This blew Amelia away as that was well in the future from her timeline. She invited the group into her cottage to tak more about things in the relative comfort of her lodgings which the group greatly welcomed.Int. Amelia Earhart’s Cabin, northwestern coast, a tropical island - Continuous
Amelia welcomed them into a small but comfortable shack. She repurposed the seats from her Electra into cozy armchairs around a makeshift fireplace. She also rigged the battery of the plane to use as a source of power for her record player. She said that the Kenku recharged the batteries though some sort of voodoo but it worked fifteen years later. When the group gave their proper introductions to Amelia, Percy was surprised that Amelia heard of her before. Apparently, Drod and Zeelie visited Amelia in the past and told her about Percy. They told Amelia to pass along a message from them that they were working on piercing The Funnel and finding a way to get them all out of there. Amelia didn’t really understand it all so Percy tried to fill her in on the developments around the Eldarin, Ezerin, the boundary breakers and the like. Percy also asked if Amelia knew of a Tiefling man named Barthor. She went over to a cot on the other side of the room and kicked awake a red Tiefling man. It turned out to be Barthor in the flesh. Amelia said that he crash-landed there a few weeks ago and had been staying with her since. Now with a reunion to celebrate and much catching up tod do, Amelia but she pulled out a bottle of whiskey which she had been saving for just such an occasion. She said she would understand better while everyone got drunk and spilled their guts which is where the session ended for the night.
